'TRAGIC COMEDY' (the new project...)

Hello internet!

I'm Ian Tordella, a freelance-saxophonist living in San Diego, CA. It's been almost two-years since my first record was released. Since then, I've been steadily working on new compositions and am now in the final stages of putting out our sophomore CD, Tragic Comedy.  Unfortunately, my previous label is on permanent-hiatus and as you know producing albums can be very expensive (and time consuming)!

I've always been humbled and thankful to have friends, fans, and jazz-lovers who've supported my creativity and original music.  Now we need your help in getting the music out.

Check out the video above to hear more about the CD.  This isn't your grandmother's jazz -- we're going further into uncharted-territory with dual electric guitars, pulling in influences from electronica, rock, and trip hop.  We borrowed two tunes from Stereolab (one of my favorite bands of the 20th century) which we happily de-constructed in a post-jazz fashion... And you won't hear any pillow-over-the-amp dark jazz guitar tones on this record.  I gave these two maniacs free-reign to use pedals, overdrive, or even to bash on the strings with an aluminum can.  Of course, you'll still find some driving modern-jazz on the record as well as one jazz-standard (which I gave a serious face-lift).

The Goal:

$4,000

We're incredibly grateful that we just passed our initial goal of $1,999! Thank you for your generosity and support. With about a month of fundraising left, we are shooting for the stars and a new goal of $4,000. This will come very close to funding the entire project from start to finish.

Here's the short list of album expenses:

-studio time & paying the engineers [approx $1500]

-compensating the musicians [$1,000]

-mixing costs, tape costs [$400]

-mastering [$500]

-artwork & pressing copies [approx $700]

-copyright registration, digital distribution,

and paying licensing fees for the three covers [approx $400]

How you can help:

I'd like to think of this as an album pre-sale, where you can reserve your CD or digital-download before the record is released.  Your pre-order funds will help cover the remaining expenses to release the album (and hopefully some of the expenses already incurred).  If you can help with an even bigger contribution, there are several other bonus rewards, like tickets to the CD release or even a house-concert for you and your friends!  Digital downloads start at $7 or $10, or tickets to the CD release + a CD + download is $60.

Check out the details and all the other options on the screen to your right!

All contributions are totally secure and will go through IndieGoGo's site.  Any contribution will be a huge help.

The Band:

The lone hold-over from the first record is my good friend guitarist Jeffrey Miles.  From San Diego, he now resides in Brooklyn, NY.  Jeff's worked with people like Terri Lyne Carrington, and has appeared at both the Monterey and Montreux jazz festivals.  He was also the winner of the 2008 Montreux Jazz Guitar competition.

On the second guitar is the always-suprising Joey Carano.  Joey is a local mystic of jazz guitar--he's worked with Karl Densen's Tiny Universe, Joe Diorio, and a host of others.  He's also steeped in traditional jazz and was lucky enough to develop a great friendship with the late guitarist-legend Barney Kessel.

Danny Weller is an incredible bass player and comes from one of the most respected musical-families in San Diego.  Also based in Brooklyn, Danny has worked with Gilbert Castellanos, Peter Sprague, Charles McPherson, Geoffrey Keezer, and Mike Wofford (among others).  [Side-note: he also has a ridiculous new CD coming out soon - it was recorded one-week before we went in the studio for this project.]

The drum chair on the record is aptly filled by Richard 'Chef' Sellers. Richard is a top-call drummer in town and previously was in my trio (along with bassist Jeff Denson).  He's played with world-renowned flautist Hubert Laws, pianist Mike Wofford, trumpeter Terrell Stafford, etc... On top of all that, he's got a big personality and is the nicest guy you'll ever meet (well, nicest drummer maybe)!

Spread the Word:

Thank you for your help on the record! Please get the word out to your pals on Facebook and Twitter!
