Our Story

Hur Publishing is a brand new indie Canadian publisher based out of Montreal and Vancouver. We make beautiful print books in limited editions, because we believe the book is a form of art. The writing we publish is quirky, smart, and carefully crafted. Last year, we published our first book, Dragon Problems, a charming picture book by Chris Carrier. In the spring of 2011, we will release Small, Stunted Ways, a book of poetry by Cynara Geissler, a young and very talented Canadian author whose work we are thrilled and honoured to publish.

The Impact

In the long run, Hur wants to become a stable, self-sufficient indie publisher with a diverse list of high-quality titles. In the short term, we want to make Small, Stunted Ways a full-colour book on luxurious stock, we want to produce a small batch of hand-bound editions, and we want to pay our starving author. With your help, we can publish the work of a talented and deserving author, create a work of art, and lay another stone in the foundation of our new company.

What We Need & What You Get

With your backing, we can:

• Pay our printers' bills. It's not cheap to print a book, especially in short runs, and the more funding we have, the better the materials we can print with.
• Pay our author. We all know it's nearly impossible to make a living writing books, but we would love to help her buy some groceries, at least.
• Throw a party to launch the book this spring. After all your help, we'd love to introduce you to Cynara, give her a venue to hold a reading, and give you a chance to get your beautiful new books signed.

If you can put $30 towards this cause, you'll get a copy of your own. For $75, you get a hand-bound edition (check out our website for a look at our handmade books). And if you sign over the full $5000, you get our firstborn child.*
