Over the years the guitar has become a global icon. More than an instrument, it has become a symbol for excitement, romance, rebellion and inspiration. For many, the guitar has become item of obsession as well as an outlet for creativity, allowing the instrument and its music to touch their every day lives. Six Strings is a film about these people.
Six Strings is a music film with a difference. While countless documentaries focus on ins and outs of a subject, Six Strings is about real people and real stories with one common love – the guitar. Skill and technical proficiency come second to the ways in which the instrument has touched their lives. Developed by writer and director James Smith, the film aims to tell the unique stories of the personalities behind the music.
In its simplest form Six Strings tells the stories of six people and their lives related to the guitar, however the global scale of the project opens doors to stories otherwise impossible to reach. Starting from a Guitarists Wanted pitch on the internet, Director James Smith threw the door open to possible subjects world over, inviting 100 word entries detailing how the subject has a profound affect on them. Immediately entries started to surface from North and South America, Australia and all across Europe with the rest of the world quickly following suit with tales of passion, heartache and everything in between linked by the love of the guitar. From rock stars and buskers to collectors and luthiers, Six Strings brings new scope to delve into what drives the obsession and the individuals behind the passion.
Combining these stories with contributions from established guitarists of various eras and genres, Six Strings provides a unique take on a truly universal subject. While all music crosses continents and language barriers, few instruments do this with the appeal of the guitar. Shot thoughtfully and artistically, the incredible characters ensure a strong and engaging narrative with an appeal far broader than that of the core subject.
The guitar itself changed the face of music. By taking an iconic subject and approaching it from a different angle Six Strings hopes to do the same to the traditional music documentary.
