Dear friends,

Many exciting things are happening around our project! I am just back from New Delhi, India, where I presented it at the 5th Int'l. Entertainment Education Conference at the invitation of Johns Hopkins University. Even though the project is not yet finished, its potential is burgeoning and drawing genuine interest around the world!

In addition, I am excited to share that Kate Amend, A.C.E., one of the top documentary editors in the U.S., has come on board as the editor who will help us finish the film. Kate received the International Documentary Association's inaugural award for Outstanding Achievement in Editing for her work, which includes two Academy Award-winning documentary features.

And now, I need YOU to come on board! I need your help to be able to finish the film. I need $15,000 to cover part of the editing costs, $7,000 to cover other post-production costs such as graphic design, transfer of 8-mm. films to Telecine, archival footage fees, as well as the online fundraising campaign fees.

SANDS OF SILENCE is a film born from my own experiences and passion and those of the many women who have shared their secret sorrows and triumphs with me. It is being brought to life by the generous creative team that is helping me make the film, often as a labor of love.

This film deeply touches the hearts and minds of audiences whenever they are shown a short clip, engaging them to join the movement against sexual exploitation and trafficking. I hope it will also move you to take action by supporting this project.

Because SANDS OF SILENCE is not just one more film on human trafficking.

Our documentary goes beyond the yellow headlines of our protagonist's abduction into sexual slavery. It delves into the complexity of the cycle of sexual exploitation that Virginia Isaias was subjected to since childhood. SANDS OF SILENCE explores how one woman's unyielding spirit is helping her overcome a destructive turmoil of emotions, and how the making of this documentary impelled her to finally fight back. Virginia, who never finished middle school and whose only resource is her deep passion for this issue, recently created the non-profit Fundación de Supervivientes de Tráfico Humano. She has become an inspiring figure for victims of child sexual abuse, gang rape, domestic violence and modern-day slavery in California. The story of Virginia's resilience, inner strength and commitment is her lasting legacy.

The film is also an introspective piece that stems from my own soul-searching journey through blurred, entangled childhood recollections. The stark stories the many survivors of sexual exploitation shared with me resonated so strongly with me that I could no longer ignore those feelings. It took me decades to unearth the memories and admit to myself that, as a child growing up in Spain, I, too, had been first a witness, then the subject of sexual harassment. This personal discovery, which came after many close interactions with Virginia, pushed me to take the uncomfortable step of exposing myself to camera.

Lastly, please check out the documentary's state-of-the-art digital outreach companion, which we are developing to create awareness and engage teenagers: SOS_SLAVES: Changing the Trafficking Game. SOS_SLAVES, currently in production, is an online platform integrating a social impact game, a micro-documentary series, and digital tools for online and real world activism.  I will share exciting news on this project in my campaign updates!

¡Tengo buenísimas noticias que compartir sobre nuestro proyecto! Acabo de volver de Nueva Delhi (India), donde tuve la oportunidad de presentarlo en la quinta conferencia internacional sobre Entretenimiento y Educación, invitada por la Universidad Johns Hopkins. Aunque el proyecto está en construcción, está atrayendo gran interés en muchos lugares del mundo.

Además, quería contaros que Kate Amend, una de las montadoras de documentales de mayor prestigio en EE UU, se ha unido como montadora a nuestro gran equipo de cineastas para ayudarnos a terminar el documental! Kate ha sido galardonada con el premio de la International Documentary Association a la excelencia en el montaje de documentales, entre los cuales destacan dos películas ganadoras del Oscar.

Pero ahora también necesito tu apoyo. Necesito que me ayudes a terminar este documental. Necesito 15.000 dólares para pagar parte del montaje, 7.000 dólares para cubrir algunos costes de postproducción como diseo gráfico, imágenes de archivo, transferencia de películas antiguas de 8 mm. a Telecine, así como el servicio de la campaña de recaudación de fondos en línea.

ARENAS DE SILENCIO nace de mis experiencias y pasión así como los de las mujeres que han compartido sus penas y sus pequeños y grandes triunfos conmigo. Una película que está cobrando vida gracias al generoso apoyo del equipo creativo que me acompaña en este proyecto, a menudo de forma desinteresada. 

Cada vez que muestro un breve segmento de este documental, constato que su mensaje conmueve profundamente al público y le motiva a sumarse a la lucha contra la explotación sexual. Espero que a ti también te llegue tan hondo, y que te anime a apoyar este proyecto.

Porque ARENAS DE SILENCIO no es otra película más sobre el tráfico humano.

Este documental va más allá de los titulares amarillos del secuestro de nuestra protagonista por traficantes y proxenetas. Analiza la complejidad del ciclo de explotación sexual y retrata el espíritu implacable de nuestra protagonista. Virginia Isaías, que sufrió acoso sexual desde niña, llevaba mucho tiempo tratando de superar todo un torbellino de emociones destructivas cuando la entrevisté por primera vez, y, aunque la decisión de participar en el documental no le resultó fácil, fue lo que le impulsó a unirse a la lucha contra el tráfico. Sin otro recurso que su pasión por esta causa, Virginia, que no terminó los estudios primarios, creó recientemente la ONG Fundación de Supervivientes de Tráfico Humano en California, donde se ha convertido en una gran activista y figura de inspiración para víctimas de acoso sexual infantil, violación en grupo, violencia doméstica y trata de personas. La capacidad de superación, la fuerza interior y el compromiso de esta gran mujer son su mejor legado.

La película es también una obra introspectiva que surge de mi propio viaje personal a través de recuerdos borrosos de la infancia. Las desgarradas historias que he escuchado durante años de tantas víctimas de explotación sexual han hecho tanto eco en mí que no he podido seguir ignorando los sentimientos que me provocan. Tardé décadas en desenterrar estos recuerdos y llegar a reconocer que, de niña, yo también fui testigo y, más tarde, objeto de acoso sexual. Este descubrimiento, que tuve después de muchos encuentros personales con Virginia, me llevó a tomar la incómoda decisión de exponerme a la cámara.
