we need your help to make safetyfest happen!

safetyfest is an annual festival celebrating all the fierce ways that queer and trans people in the Bay Area stay safe and strut our stuff.  safetyfest 2011 is happening April 14-17, 2011 in San Francisco and Oakland!  It'll all kick off with a sexy launch party in Downtown Oakland, followed by dozens of amazing free workshops, cultural events, and art and healing activities on both sides of the bay, and wrap up with a hella fun closing party in SF. We need your help to make safetyfest a reality! Your support helps keep most events free and accessible to the community.

The first-ever safetyfest took place in 2010 and was super fabulous beyond our wildest dreams--over 300 people attended! This years festivities will build on last year's strengths and deepen the impact of what we can do together.  We're bringing back the most popular workshops from last year like self-defense, sexual consent, writing, BDSM, Bay history bike tour, and more, and adding new workshops based on feedback from attendees and other folks in our community. What do you want to see at safetyfest this year? Send your ideas to safetyfest@cuav.org

the impact we make together!

LGBTQQ people face many forms of violence in our daily struggles to survive and thrive--at the hands of partners, dates, family members, neighbors, police, immigration, employers, and others. And yet our fabulousness continues! safetyfest is a space for our communities to come together to share all the ways we stay safe and practice the world we long for. Organized by us, for us, our annual festival makes some powerful magic in the world: we share our skills, stories, and hope with one another as we send a message far and wide that real safety is possible!

who creates safetyfest?

safetyfest is organized by members and allies of Community United Against Violence (CUAV), an organization that works to build the power of LGBTQQ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and questioning) people in the Bay Area to create safe, loving communities free from all forms of violence. Founded in 1979, CUAV provides free life-saving support to LGBTQQ survivors of violence; uses art and community-building to create a vibrant culture of safety; and organizes our communities for racial, gender, immigrant, and social justice.

what we need, what you get!

How much does safety cost? Here's a little math.

  • safetyfest 2011 will cost about $12,000 to put on--that includes venues, food & beverages, printing & promotion, and more. We keep costs as low as possible by asking for donations wherever we can, and being a team of mostly volunteer organizers, facilitators, and performers.
  • We want the festival to be free to attend.
  • We want the money that we raise during the festival to go directly to CUAV's free services for LGBTQQ survivors of violence.
  • We want local businesses to cover $7,000 of the expenses.

That's where you come in--we are asking individual folks in our communities who long for communities free from abuse to invest in safetyfest. Help us raise $5,000 to make safetyfest a free, annual institution in the Bay Area! In this era of huge budget cuts, we are our own safety net!

Heres some more math- to raise $5,000, we just need 20 people to contribute $250 each.  Or 200 people to contribute $25 each!

When you invest in safetyfest 2011, you become a part of a fierce family of safety-makers. And as if that wasn't enough, you can also get some great perks for donating, like a CUAV t-shirt, a bike tune-up, a piece of original artwork, or a tattoo! (see full list on the right hand side of this page).
