Raising the Village

Raising the Village is a Canadian charity focused on alleviating poverty through sustainable education solutions in rural and hard-to-reach places in Africa. Currently in its first year as a recognized charity, RTV has already built two schools (a third on its way!), an orphanage and has a big plan for expanding education in 2011.

100% of public donations made directly to RTV goes straight to projects in Africa.  RTV makes a difference by working with local communities, teaching them systems of sustainability, in order for them to support these schools and other initiatives.

Why We Are Going

RTV is about to launch with 64 new projects scheduled for the coming two years. In order to garner financial support for these projects, we need to bring Uganda's story to supporters like you so you know exactly why and how you can help. At this time, there is not enough material for us to work with to convey Uganda's needs thoroughly. So, we're going to get it.

RTV would not exist without the dedication of its members. There are no paid staff, every member is a volunteer, donating their time and skill in hopes of seeing Africa empowered by education. Because we (Shawn, Jennifer, Claudia and Wilson) believe in this so much, we are 100% personally funding this upcoming trip in March in order to further our work with RTV.

What We Need & What You Get

Getting to the other side of the world takes a fair amount of cost. So we're hoping to get some help alleviating a portion of the finances to cover our flights and on-ground transportation.

Here is the breakdown of our fundraising per person:

$1800 - Roundtrip flight to Uganda

$550   - Vaccines, Visa, on-ground transportation

$75-$100 - Food

$$$? - Misc. expenses needed for a safe and successful trip (hiking clothes/gear, first aid / survival kits, water sanitation systems, tools etc.)

Total Per Person:
$2400+

Some wonderfully talented people and companies donated many Gift-in-Kinds in support of this fundraising effort so that you can get something really unique as our thanks for your involvement. There are minimum donation amounts for each "Perk" and Perks are very limited due to the custom or handmade nature of the items.

Please note that your transactions are safely and securely handled. Please also be aware that all donation amounts are in US$.

Team
Claudia Hung
Photographer. Claudia is an award-winning, recognized photographer. Her role on this trip will be to capture the progress of RTV's past and current projects, as well as imagery of the people who've been changed by RTV.
Shawn Cheung
Founder and Fearless Leader. Shawn is the founder of RTV and will be the team lead on this trip, organizing all the logistics so that Jennifer and Claudia aren't stranded somewhere near the border of Congo (hurray!). Shawn will also be meeting with town officials and our Ugandan team to further our progress in Africa.
Wilson Chung

Jennifer Au
Creative Director. Jennifer will have a big role in shaping and molding the visual information (photo and video) we bring back from this trip, which will be used for all of RTV's upcoming promotional and information material.
