Rounds is an exciting new project bringing together nine artists and eight writers for a large-scale exhibition and a high-end art book that is groundbreaking for Perth, Western Australia.
Since September 2009, the artists Bennett Miller, Rebecca Baumann, Elise and Jurgen, George Egerton-Warburton, Shannon Lyons, Neil Aldum, Tim Carter and Sarah Rowbottam have been engaged in a formal and conceptual process of exchange and response over seven months.
Curated by Sarah Rowbottam, the artists were invited to make new art works over four demanding six-week cycles. At the end of each cycle, the artists presented their artwork to another artist in the group who in-turn made a new work in response.
The works produced within this interesting hermetic framework range from an interactive three metre high swinging structure and a perpetual motion tennis ball-firing machine, massive wooden targets, to a record player with multiple needles, a cabinet of exquisite drawings, an instrumental foosball table, written prose and a rap song, as well as a full-room installation by with regular Saturday afternoon appearances by Rolly the dog.
The fruits of this ambitious project will be brought together in an all-encompassing installation of the 29 artworks through the Perth Institute of Contemporary Arts Central Galleries and a 192 page full colour book dense with brilliant images of artwork and intelligent writing that goes beyond the usual catalogue essay to contextualise and elaborate the Perth art landscape.
The eight essayists Jess Hutchens, Gemma Weston, Matthew Giles, Christina Chau, Andrew Varano, Andrew Nicholls, Katie Lenanton and Andrew Purvis support the looks of the book with monumental brains. They have been given free reign to approach the work of their artists in the best way they see fit, and to engage with them face-to-face in a set of interviews which reveal the personalities behind the artists. Together, the essays and interviews investigate the Rounds artists work, the issues their work addresses, the condition of making art in Perth, and what it means to be an artist.
