Am I Shaman? Am I Robot?
I am My name is Christiane D. Im an artist. I write songs. I make music. This all leads to releasing my first solo studio album called Obliquity of the Ecliptic.
OOTE is the tug of contradictory urges that pull on the planet to fall into the sun or make a break for the outer darkness, passions pulling on the human soul.*-Graham Hancock In each song is a story and in each story is humanity, struggling to survive, falling from grace or rising to the heavens. Struggling for balance.
OOTE showcases songs that have never found a home: songs that were half completed, scribbled; songs poorly recorded on cassette; songs with only a chorus ringing in my head while in the shower. My music draws upon the traditional African-American styles of Jazz, Blues, Funk and Hip-Hop, but is also a fusion of these influences with Rock, Punk, Classical/Opera, multitude of world/ethnic music and early Electronica.
If youre wondering what kind of genre, I call it esque.
The Beginning is a delicate time Since February 2010, Ive been in communication with a recording engineer/producer based in Los Angeles, who has worked with many artists who in turn have won several Grammies. He has been what I call, Micro -mentoring me on how to break into the songwriting field. This involved having a catalog songs. OOTE is that song catalog.
Working with engineer/co-producer, John Purse, we began working towards that goal.
In May of 2010, I received an August Wilson Center Fellowship in support of my first solo studio album in pursuit of a new path in songwriting. The fellowship gave me the chance to grow, focus on songwriting, experiment musically, whilst gaining recording and production skills. I made use of this opportunity to work with over twenty amazing Pittsburgh based musicians and three producers.
While the support of the AWC Fellowship has paid for the nuts and bolts of making this album, Im still in need of additional support for promotions.
Sparkling dust Over the past thirteen years, I fronted the band Soma Mestizo and worked as a singer and lyricist with various bands and collaborators. Ive been fortunate to be able to work with a variety of great musicians, in a variety of genres. Today, Ive created a musical body of work built on these exploratory experiences.
My voice and/or lyrics have been featured on Soma Mestizo releases (4th World Vodoo Art Rock), 3 Generations Walking (Afro-Brazilian Deep House), Indigenous Resistance (Global Dub), and Phat Man Dee (Jazz Chanteuse).
Releases that have been heard cities worldwide from New York, London, Columbia, Brazil, Germany, Solomon Islands, Japan, to Italy (based on airplay and royalty records) and those are the places I want OOTE to travel to.
Rockin and a Rollin Not wanting to put a band together, I gathered a bevy of unique and talented musicians, some friends, some I have just pinned to work with, to bring life to these songs.
In the mode of improvisation, I presented each musician with (extremely rough) sketches and asked only that the tempo and the mood stay the same. Each song featured a different grouping of musicians from different genres, many who have never met or played together. I wanted to capture that spontaneous magic that happens with a live band in one room, expressing the danger of performing a new work. Like reading a map in the rain and still finding your way.

The album is done, now what? Much has changed in the music industry. Releasing an album today is no longer as simple as a poster and press release. While there are traditional funding sources available to individual artists to create a project, resources to assist in the promotion of the finished project are rare, if not severely limited.
To have a broader impact and release this record globally, means raising additional funds for promotions: two world class videos, graphic design, usb and download cards, publicist with international connects and yeah, even some posters.
So, Im gonna do, something I rarely do, that is to ask for help, from those who know me, from those who appreciate my work and from those I dont even know who may become more than a little intrigued and hopefully new friends.
So, what do you get, well, besides an acknowledgment on my website, stickers, T-shirts, Art/Poetry book, Wine, Lyrical Fortune Cookies, to name a few luscious, delish items.
Support is how easy? $ 4,750 is:
- 950 people at $ 5
- 190 people at $ 25
- 95 people at $ 50
I know times arent easy, but whatever support you could provide would be greatly appreciated. Donors will be listed on my website; links to your art and/or projects.
Thank you!
Thee additionals... SAVE THE DATE: Release happening at the Shadow Lounge Friday, November 25th. Doors 7 pm. DJ Selector. 8 pm. $ 10, % of proceeds to benefit the American Red Cross.
