YOUVI is a tiny device that measures Ultra Violet (UV) radiation of sunlight at the device's location in real-time. Plugged into a smartphone or tablet it determines and displays the UV Index (UVI) and, based on a person's skin type it calculates the safe time a person can spend exposed in the current sunlight conditions, alerting users in time to prevent sunburn and other negative health effects.
Furthermore, YOUVI measures the ambient temperature and displays it beside the UV Index.
YOUVI is plugged into the audio jack of your Smart Device and operates without any external power supply. It can also be plugged in by using an extension cable, in order to keep the Smart Device out of direct sunlight exposure.
The YOUVI App is capable of handling multiple user profiles and take into account the effects of sun tan oils and creams. It can embed selected users into sunbathing sessions quickly and easily.
Session participants will be alerted individually when reaching their maximum exposure time within safety limits (by individual count-down clocks).
In addition to that you can share current measured UV Index and temperature values with other YOUVI community members by uploading the information along with the time and location directly from your device. No personal information will be shared!
YOUVI can be unplugged at any time during a session (for example to take a call or listen to music) but it will continue a triggered session in the background.
By the way, YOUVI does not need any battery to operate!
Sun is fun and sun is the source of all live on earth! No question about that.
But, too much of a good thing may do you harm!
YOUVI can help you to measure and determine the sunlight UV Index and answer the question "How much sun is too much sun?"... Whenever you want to know it.
As you may know small amounts of UV radiation can be beneficial for your health, but excessive exposure to UV radiation is associated with different types of skin cancers, sunburn, accelerated skin aging, cataract and other eye diseases (source: WHO).
The goal of YOUVI is to create awareness of harmful UV radiation from the sunlight with an easy to use device that measures the ambient UV intensity accurately in real-time.
YOUVI is an ideal source of protection for people living in high temperature, sunny, locations, and for those 'seeking the Sun' during vacations. Regarding sunburn, it is particularly useful for babies, young children and others with 'sensitive' skins.
Many Apps indicating UV Index are available currently. But those are using data measured from far away observation stations and by varying intervals.
YOUVI measures the UV radiation at your location in real-time, since many factors affect the ambient UV intensity.
Factors affecting the local ambient UV intensity (source):
The following graph illustrates the compliance between the normalized Erythema (CIE 1987) and our sensor responses over wavelength, hence indicates the accuracy of YOUVI.
Over exposure of sunlight and hence UV radiation affects skin. The usual symptoms are red or reddish skin that is hot to the touch, general fatigue and mild dizziness.
YOUVI can also help you to control your skin tan by better monitoring the UV from the sunlight.
Last but not least, UV radiation causes sunburns and increases the risk of skin cancers, triggered by damaging DNA.
Some statistics on global skin cancer rate by 2008 (source)
Children and adolescents are particularly vulnerable to the harmful effects of UV radiation.
Around 80% of damage caused by sunlight occures prior to 18th year of age.
YOUVI can accompany you during your day to day activities in sunny days. It can even be used by people working outside such as construction workers, farmers, etc. to stay informed about real-time sunlight UV radiation.
An obvious use case for YOUVI is sunbathing sessions, especially while enjoying holiday at the beach. Furthermore, all outdoor sports activities can be supported by YOUVI. Consider for example the extreme increase of UV intensity by snow reflection and at higher altitude on mountains when you ski.
The capability of YOUVI to handle multiple session participants at the same time with individual alerting can be very relevant for those use cases.
YOUVI can be used to support Researchers, Dermatologists and Cancer Institutes to conduct long-term studies on the effects of sunlight UV on human skin and health as YOUVI is capable of storing all measured data of all sessions locally on the device (without personal identification).
For example the data could be utilized to refine existing classifications of skin types.
Same YOUVI device can be used on Apple and Android devices.
We are continuously testing new Android devices and will update frequently.
We have been working on YOUVI for more than 6 months from conception to prototyping Hardware and Software. We have already built fully functional prototypes and software and are highly excited to experience YOUVI in action. We are almost ready for mass production.
Here is our plan:
Building hardware is costly. We need tools & molds, sensors and electronic components as well as factory development time. Furthermore, the apps for Android and iOS as well as the web interface for sharing UV Index and Temperature need to be further developed.
A non-negligible amount is allocated for fees.
With your help we can make YOUVI become real. It would be awesome to provide a trendy device that can create awareness of sunlight UV radiation and the effects on humans.
We are looking to raise a minimum of US$ 55.000. Please help us to raise the funds by choosing one of the perks.
Here is the breakdown how we will use the funds:
Even if you can't help us with pledging, please support us by promoting YOUVI and the video to as many people as possible. We were very grateful to you for sharing and spreading YOUVI within your network in order to raise awareness.
The challenges are to test YOUVI and App on as many devices as possible to ensure operability
Approval in the Apples App Store is of risk to be rejected in the first place. In such a case YOUVI App needs to be reworked in order to be compliant and the release might be delayed
Mass production quality control: Quality matters! Hence, we may need to go multiple iteration rounds of tooling and pre-production to ensure the mechanical and electrical quality of YOUVI we would like to achieve, which may delay initial shipment
Production and functional tests: In order to make sure YOUVI works as it should be, we are going to do production and function tests to each unit (100%). If we receive pre-orders below 1500 units we will test the devices ourselves prior to shipping. For orders higher than 1500 units we would need to conduct production tests at the factory and would need to extend our team, which may cause delay in shipping the devices
Design: It may be needed to make some modifications on current housing design due to manufacturing requirements
We are a group of engineers, scientists and user experience experts with huge industry experiences in designing and bringing mobile and consumer electronic devices to the market (please see the team of this campaign). Over the past years the team has worked for world leading mobile handset maker selling millions of units monthly, software companies and research institutes.
We all share our passion for innovation and technology that is useful for humans in their day to day life.
