My name is Long Cuu Phan, I'm a writer-director from Los Angeles California, now based in Beijing. I made my first short in 2004, and since then my work like This Will All Make Perfect Sense Someday, has played across the globe at pretigious festivals such as Tribeca, Short Shorts Tokyo, and Hawaii International.
I'm raising money to shoot new short film in Spring 2013 called YOUTH. It's a coming of age drama set in Beijing about a college student who learns that her father's new wife is pregnant. It's what would happen if you remixed Ozu x Godard x Korean Romcoms.
I've spent the last 2 years writing the script, and the past four years dreaming about when I could make this film. Now is the time.
Shooting in China is infinitely more difficult and more expensive than it is in Los Angeles. My goal is listed as $12,000 USD, but the real number is closer to $20,000 if I include the fees for this site (4%/9%) and the gifts. All of the money will all go to production, I've not included post production into this estimation. I know it seems like a lot for a short film so I've put together a prelimnary budget outline (Soon!) for anyone who is interested can see where exactly the money is going.
Without your support this film simply won't happen. I can't afford to shoot it out of pocket simply because I don't have that kind of money. And going guerilla style, skeleton crew and shooting on DSLRs, which I did for Never Looking Back, won't work for this project.
And to be completely honest, I've worked on this script for almost two years, but have been dreaming about it for much longer. It is near and dear to my heart, and I refuse to shoot if it isn't done right. A quarter of the budget is allocated to a high end digital camera package, but the majority of the money will go into paying actors, crew, locations and all the other necessities that goes into making a world class film. And make no mistake, this is exaclty what this film is, world-class. It's something I've worked the last 9 years to be able to make and with your support I will be able to do it.
What We Need & What You get!
We need you to repost on facebook, tweet, e-mail, spread the word about this film. We need you to donate money. We need you to help make this film happen period.
Sean Marc Lee is volunteering his time and flying to Beijing from Taiwan to shoot the set photos. As a contributor, you have the chance to receive prints from this excellent adventure. You'll also have the chance to receive a photojournal of his work on this project.
Everyone who donates will get a digital download of the film. And I will be sending out handwritten postcards from Beijing as well. I can't offer much, other than that, other than the promise that your support is appreciated and will be used to make something truly special.
If we don't reach our goal, I will find a way to come up with the rest of the money. It will probably mean pushing the shoot from Spring 2013 to Fall 2013, or possibly Spring 2014. Like I said earlier, I'm doing this right or not at all.
The goal is to make a perfect film. And the goal is also to take this to Cannes, straight up.
HOW YOU CAN HELP?
Cash Money! But I know not everyone is able to help out financially, so please share on facebook if you truly believe in this project, or retweet, email, blog it, get the word out online!
Also, campaigns take up a lot of time and I have no team to help and have full-time 9-5 job. If anyone is interested in being a part of this project, or has any ideas to help, please feel free to contact me! Facebook, twitter, here.
Whatever the form of your support, thank you! Thanks for helping me make this dream project come true.
