Today, more than ever, photographers have many options. The mainstream ones are mostly digital and film is unfortunately on a sharp extinction curve. If film disappears, we feel that we would lose an amazing tool. At the same time, we cannot ignore progress. Digital photography is here to stay and definitely has its place in our tool chest. Therefore this project is all about choices and empowering photographers. Our project aims to help save film and offer photographers the choice of using it together with a smart 21st century digital solution. Imagine a camera that can use both film and digital sensors through interchangeable backs. Simple and always upgradeable, rugged, powered by efficient batteries, running on open-source code with apps and user-programmed add-ons. And if you have and love vintage lenses, why not use them too? We want a system that fights obsolescence as much as possible. This camera with all these features and more is feasible with your help.
Please have a look at the feature list below.
Proposed Feature List
>>user upgradable (simply get another sensor when you need it) full frame (35mm equivalent) CMOS sensor in the 25 MP range (with built-in shake compensation);
>>fast drive (in the 6fps range for the digital back) and higher for the 35mm film back;
>>included, yes, you read it right, included 35mm film back (let's help save film);
>>HD video enabled, but we'll have an optional videography-specific back (it's about time for one of these, and let's do it right the first time for some serious kick ass video, with RAW video output, of course);
>>optional Polaroid back compatible with 600 type film (now available from the Impossible Project);
>>optional medium format film back (120 film, will require medium format lenses);
>>optional monochrome only back (no Bayer layer) for super enhanced resolution and some really high ISO ranges for those night street shots;
>>optional IR-enabled digital sensor back;
>>no in-camera anti-aliasing (AA) for razor sharp images;
>>optical viewfinder with built-in optional hi-res EVF (electronic viewfinder);
>>large (no smaller than 3 inches), 3:2 ratio, live view, high resolution touch-enabled screen;
>>Compatible with modern AF lenses AND manual vintage lenses from most major manufacturers;
>>RAW (DNG) files;
>>open source OS and firmware;
>>open source lens mount;
>>3G network connectivity, social network enabled (if you want more such features, read next item);
>>modular, you-get-them-if-you-need-them-only, features such as wi-fi, blue tooth, GPS, 4G;
>>USB 3.0 and fully tethered capability;
>>rugged, sealed, recyclable metal body;
>> and more!
(this feature list will probably evolve slightly as time goes by and with your help; feel free to add your suggestions on our Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/Xcypo)
We aim for a price in the US $3000 range for the body with the digital back and the included 35mm film back. Lenses, other optional backs and add-ons will be extra.
We feel that there is huge potential in having a versatile camera that can switch from digital to film in an instant. Many photographers out there still love film and want to keep using it. We must save film and we need and want versatility. By tapping the amazing talent of the community of photographers, engineers and camera enthusiasts out there, we can design a camera that will help save film.
The impact of such a camera can be huge in many ways. One apparently simple, but very important aspect is reusing excellent vintage lenses that, in most cases, are sitting around abandoned. Thus, precious natural resources can be saved, pollution reduced and obsolescence challenged in style. Why throw away perfectly usable, sharp and drop-dead beautiful lenses? By reusing these gorgeous lenses, and not having to manufacture new ones, we can concentrate on the really important aspects such as the user interface, interchangeable backs, apps, design, sensor, etc.
If we fail in bringing this to life, we lose an amazing opportunity to change the history of photography and the lives of many thousands of photographers.
If we succeed, we will prove that we are not simply end-users stuck with obsolete products that will go to the landfill or sit around gathering dust. We don't want film to disappear. That would limit our choices and, as photogs, we need freedom in order to create. No, we are exactly the opposite. We are innovators that can change the course of photography. We can make people love photography and film again! We want smart tools that don't stand in our way when we create. Let's succeed together at this.
What We Need & What You Get
We need you to mobilize and help out in any way you can. The money contributions are obviously crucial. With the money that you will contribute, we will start researching and designing the prototypes. This campaign is just a start. We'll need more money. $200,000.00 will not be enough, that is a certainty. But, the more people contribute, the more clout we'll have when negotiating manufacturing and distribution terms. We'll have other funding campaigns and can even obtain more capital from venture capital investors. Every single penny collected will be used to further improve the concept and pitch the idea to investors in hopes of gathering all the funds required in designing, manufacturing and launching the product. Furthermore, we are confident we will attain this initial goal with your help. Most importantly, get involved any way you can and let all your friends know. We really need you to tell everybody about this project if we are to succeed and make this a reality.
What do you get? Huge karma, some really unique perks, and the knowledge that you made history by helping save a legend, i.e. film. Have a look at what we are offering. We're sure you'll love it. Anything helps. We would love to read your comments and suggestions. Why not interact with us on Facebook and Twitter? Can't wait to hear from you and your friends.
Other Ways You Can Help
We hope that this initiative becomes a community-driven project with you fully participating as much as possible. We wish to make this as open and interactive as feasible. We need funding, but you can also help us with the project by providing engineering and programming insight. You suggest the features and also help implement them if you have the know-how. We would love to hear from you if you have experience with hardware design, programming, optics, firmware and other similar areas. If you are a developer, you will also have the opportunity to create apps for the system. Let's make photography history together!
But don't forget the perks. Please have a look at what we're offering and don't miss out.
We all believe that it's time for a real camera. A camera that is built by and for the photographer. We'll call it xCYPO. And it will be yours too.
Thank you kindly and don't be a stranger!
