My name is Josh Stepakoff. In 1999, when I was only 6, I was shot by a gunman who fired over 70 rounds into my day camp. Listening to the news about Newtown, Conn., I was horrified to find out that it was the exact same thing that happened to me thirteen years ago. The pictures of the children being reunited with their families, all the parents waiting to hear about their children, all the kids being taken out of the school - all those images were identical to what I saw as a 6 year old.
I'm scared, I'm angry, I'm sad and I just wish I could go out there and help everybody. I'm filled with disgust knowing that we've let this happen again.
I am helping Women Against Gun Violence raise $25,000 over the next 50 days to support this Organization's programs to educate the public about the realities of gun violence and mobilize communities in support of sensible gun legislation. Please donate what you can. Every dollar helps us fund the programs we need to support this valuable cause.
As a member of the Women Against Gun Violence Speaker's Bureau, I have the opportunity to turn my grief into action by sharing my story with others so that we can work together to avert future tragedies.
As survivors, we share our stories with communities.
We share them so that people recognize the real life consequences of gun violence.
We share them so that parents know how to talk with their kids about guns and let them know what to do if they are in a situation where a gun is present.
9 kids a day--every day--are killed in gun related incidents.
We share our stories so that people will be moved to join with us in calling on our legislators to enact common sense, reasonable gun laws, like the reinstatement of the Assault Weapons Ban, a ban on the sale of high capacity ammunition magazines, and a stronger system of background checks. (40% of gun sales occur without background checks.)
Women Against Gun Violence has a track record of success, including removing junk guns from the streets of Los Angeles and successfully advocating for California’s strict gun laws. We can do the same for the nation.
