What is We Are Friends?
We Are Friends began in 2008 in Vancouver as a twisted idea for a fight scene and has since evolved into a monster of a feature film. We are Massachusetts natives and long-time friends Stebs Schinnerer and Trevor Moore, and we've been pointing cameras at each other for the past decade-plus. Now we're possessed by a mutual vision we can't shake: a movie about movies, violence, vanity, friendship and politics-- an autobiography with a touch of allegory. Organic and genuine, the film draws heavily from the lives and talents of the creators and their friends. The project is as independent as it is ambitious.
Weaving elements of docufiction, action, drama, and comedy with a hard-hitting narrative, we aim to create a completely original look, feel, and tempo. Almost every aspect of the film's production concept, writing, pre-production, acting, shooting, editing, marketing, and distribution-- are handled by Stebs, Trevor, and their friends. This is truly a passion project.
put, were raising money! Since 2008, we have had a strong vision
to create something completely independent and original, funded by
friends, family and people who are excited about the project (new
friends!) not by large corporate investors. By keeping the
funding in close quarters, we will maintain total creative control of
the final product. We feel we have a truly unique concept and vision
for this film, and we aim to maintain that in full funding the
film this way will allow us to do that.
Were Doing It
a feature film is difficult and requires a lot of careful planning
and budgeting. We have heard over and over that a feature film with a
budget under a million dollars is near impossible to shoot and make
compelling and cinematic we beg to differ. By shooting
guerilla-style in many locations and keeping a large majority of the
others owned and operated by friends and family, we will be able to
keep our budget much lower than any normal film. While we have a
small number of scenes with intense action (like a real car
crash!), we have numerous friends who will be lending a knowledgable
and helping hand in creating safe, manageable and low-cost scenes,
while still maintaining realism and complexity.
the budget we are creating, the funding will allow us to hire the
perfect crew of amazingly talented people, travel to Vancouver, lock
down larger locations like clubs and Vancouver streets, and assure
that all of our more involved scenes will have the proper
precautionary measures to keep our cast and crew safe.
is behind We Are Friends?
one word: FRIENDS. Everyone involved in this film is either a
friend of the two directors, or is a friend of their friends. From
the actors to the producers, makeup artists, sound engineers and
editors, the entire film's cast and crew is made up of a group of
people with dynamic chemistry and a shared vision for the film. We
believe that maintaining this will not only keep the film's original
vision intact, it will keep the crew passionate, excited and focused.
the status of the production?
top of the already busy lives of the directors, The We Are Friends
crew is currently working hard to lock down locations in the Boston
area and in the Vancouver area, as well as coordinating with new
crew, cast and assorted team members to build the perfect team of
people! Our group is also out and about doing many field-tests to
experiment with new and interesting shooting and storytelling styles
from attending massive concerts, to secretly recording everyday
conversations,. We are working everyday to bring this very unique
vision to the big screen in the truest fashion possible.
can I help?
you asked! Donating ya change to help get this project up and
running is always a good option, but if that's not your cup of tea,
offering up services or connecting us with people who might be
interested in helping us to carry out our mission is awesome too!
