My name is Joe Nava and I am the writer and producer of Violeta (vee oh LEH tah). My partner Molly OConnor is the director and producer. We are two passionate filmmakers living in Los Angeles who have decided to take our ambitions into our own hands by making our film.
We are tired of producers and executives saying, No, you cant do that, or That idea wont sell. We want to make Violeta on our own terms, and we want to do so in an environment that encourages creativity and collaboration, without fear of failure or accountability to anyone but to ourselves and to our crew. This is why we need your help.
Deep in the rural South, Carmen, a young Mexican woman, betrays her lifelong friend Violeta by having a love affair with Wesley, Violeta's husband. When Violeta mysteriously dies, Carmen is determined to honor her wishes with an old-fashioned Mexican funeral. As Carmen keeps vigil over the body overnight, she experiences disturbing visions and acts of violence against her. Has Violetas ghost come back to haunt her or is Carmens guilt driving her mad?
We dont consider Violeta just a horror film. Its a Southern Gothic love story. Its a psychological thriller. You can even say its a melodrama. When I set out to write the script, I was interested in themes of betrayal and forbidden love. Eventually, these themes manifested themselves through a ghost story and I knew I had something different, something special.
Our goal is to raise $10,000 to shoot a 12 minute, professional grade HD film.
Even with all the favors we are calling in and our crew volunteering their time, the reality is that we still need to pay for production costs. These costs include a camera package, lighting and grip equipment, insurance, location rental, and post production. However, our biggest expense will be in Production Design, as we have to recreate the interior of a Southern Gothic Victorian home and put on an old-fashioned Mexican funeral.
If we dont raise our goal in this campaign, we will run another campaign until we have enough money to move forward. Rest assured, your money will only go to funding this film. If that means delaying production for a month or two, so be it. We want to make this film on our own terms, without sacrificing quality, and we wont let something as trivial as money prevent us from accomplishing our goals.
We understand that our project wont change the world. Were not fighting for a cause or against a disease. We are filmmakers with a distinct point of view who want to express ourselves artistically through cinema. Its that simple.
The state of the Hollywood movie industry isnt conducive to the types of films were interested in making. We believe that story and character should win out over spectacle and special effects. We dont make decisions out of fear of how it will affect our box office, nor do we aim to appeal to as a wide an audience as possible. We just want to make a movie that will inspire, entertain, perhaps even haunt you.
There are many worthwhile projects on Indiegogo and we encourage you to donate to those in which you believe in. But if you believe that cinema should be provocative and daring, that it should make you think as much as it makes you feel, that it should be both deeply personal and artistically collaborative, then I humbly urge you to contribute to our film.
We offer incentives for you to donate, from DVDs and production stills, to an evening at Hollywood's Magic Castle and starring in your own spoof of Violeta. We hope to make you part of the filmmaking process. You can follow every step of the way: hiring our crew, casting actors, shooting the film every triumph and disappointment until the day we premiere the film on the big screen.
OTHER WAYS TO CONTRIBUTE
We know that money is tight for many people and even the smallest contribution can seem unaffordable. But you can help us in other ways, too.
1) Spread the word! Tell your friends and family about our film. Like our Facebook page, follow us on Twitter. Give us a shout out on your blog. You can follow and support us through every step of production!
2) Volunteer. If you want to be a part of our film crew, please contact us. Working with a crew on a movie is one of the most powerful bonding experiences you can have. Plus, you learn about filmmaking from talented professionals in the industry.
3) Contribute other items. You can donate a case of water or soda. Maybe you have an old Victorian house we can shoot in. Perhaps you can call in a favor or put in a good word on our behalf. Seriously, every little contribution helps!
