HI, I’M TRIANGLE PI!
Triangle Pi Productions is a small, independent theatre company based in Toronto, Ontario. We support and produce new and challenging works of theatre by emerging artists.
We love theatre. We want it to be awesome. But in order for theatre to continue being awesome the next generation of theatre artists needs to have a place to work and explore, to push envelopes and take chances and connect with audiences.
That’s where we come in. Brett Haynes, the founder of Triangle Pi, knows what it’s all about. When he graduated from George Brown Theatre School and saw how difficult it was out there for new directors, writers, actors and designers he said, “NO MORE! I SHALL TOIL AND TRUDGE SO THAT NEW ARTISTS MAY HAVE AN OPPORUNITY TO SHINE!” He didn’t literally say that, but I’m pretty sure that was the gist.
So here we are, producing a bold and exciting new work by a brand spankin’ new writer/director named Fraser Elsdon. The play is called VACANT, and we’re doing it at the Alumnae theatre in Toronto on October 3rd to the 13th, 2012.
But we can’t do it without your help.
VACANT is a play about morality, relationships and the search for authenticity in digital-age Toronto. The story centres around a successful young investment banker named Matthew whose life begins to unravel when he discovers a woman unconscious on a subway platform. When she turns out to be a ‘mystery woman’ with no identity and possessed of an unknown ailment, Matthew—along with the media—becomes obsessed with her. In this ‘empty’ woman he sees reflected his own spiritual and emotional emptiness and that of the society he lives in.
The writer/director, Fraser Elsdon, is a graduate of the George Brown Theatre School’s acting program. We believe that VACANT, his first play, is a story that needs to be told. It is a dark, troubling, and ultimately sympathetic portrayal of people who are lost, cut off from each other by the rise of technology and the isolating effect of the city. More and more of our lives are lived online; more and more of us live alone. What does that do to our relationships? What does it do to our souls?
Working on the project are the talented actors Andy Trithardt, Jon Brass and Andy Perun, and lighting and set designer George Quan, all emerging artists.
Here’s what we’ll use your donations for:
- THEATRE RENTAL
- MARKETING (POSTERS AND POSTCARDS)
- REHEARSAL SPACE
- PROPS AND COSTUMES
Our biggest single expense is the theatre rental, at $2600.00, followed by marketing and rehearsal space, and finally props, costumes and set. The set includes a couch and a hospital bed, among other things. The artists are being paid on a profit-sharing basis, which means this is a labour primarily of love. We are not receiving any government grants. To make up the funds not covered by our indiegogo campaign, we held a live fundraising event earlier this summer in Toronto. It was a great success, but there’s more work to be done and more funds to be raised.
We believe deeply in the value of this project and the opportunity it will provide for the next generation of theatre artists.
Thank you so much for your support—we can’t do it without you.
