What is Tiles for America?
Answer: Tiles for America is NYC's first spontaneous, living 9/11 Memorial created by the people the day after the tragic events of 9/11.
“Thousands of tiles reflecting [the voices of] patriotism, heroes, courage, unity, poetry and other positive themes arrived in NYC and were hung on the chain-link fence at Mulry Square [spawning a one-of-a-kind visual message of unity and cooperation]. They continue to arrive.”
The Memorial is located in the heart of the West Village at the corner of Greenwich Avenue and 7th Avenue South and has been featured in television shows, movies, and music videos. The tiles hang on a rusted, chain-link fence surrounding property owned by NYC’s MTA.
Special Thanks to the Comtemporary Ceramic Studios Association (CCSA), their member studios, and countless others, the Memorial continued to grow, change, and flourish, attracting countless NYers and tourist.
A CALL TO ACTION IS REQUIRED: Tiles for America faces the imminent danger of extinction! These tiny voices will no longer be heard.
The MTA hosts the Memorial site and has been gracious enough to allow the Memorial to exist since its inception. Plans have been announced to build a ventilation station where the Memorial is located. Since the removal of the fence is needed to commence the construction, the Memorial must come down by October 1, 2012.
Make your contribute to American History, now! Save Tiles for America by giving to the Tiles for America Preservation Project, with pledges starting at $9.11.
Tiles for America Preservation Society: Since the Memorial's inception, local residents have expended their personal time and money to maintain Tiles for America and the Memorial location. These residents have unified their voices by establishing Tiles for America Preservation Society, whose responsibility is to address all concerns pertaining to Tiles for America.
Tiles for America Preservation Project: To date there has never been a grant issued or any public monies given on behalf of Tiles for America. In response to the lack of public funding, the Society has established the Tiles for America Preservation Project. The Preservation Project is a community intitiative focused on raising financial resources urgently needed to support the start-up cost of removing, restoring, preserving and exhibiting Tiles for America.
