Amy Lukas & Mary Catterlin
South End Locals, Great Lake Surfers
We are setting out to sail the perimeter of Lake Michigan and document the experience aboard our handmade canoe. Lake Michigan has 1,638 miles of shoreline total. Our trip will traverse over 1,200 of these miles. If we travel 10-25 miles everyday, be it sailing or paddling, our trip is predicted to last around 2 months. Weather, waves, and delays on land may contribute to the trip lasting as long as 3 months! So Lake Michigan’s ports and campgrounds will be our home for perhaps a quarter of a year. Our journey will begin with the Indiana waters taking us westward up along the Illinois and Wisconsin border, from island to island off Door Peninsula, through the Upper Peninsula, and back down through Michigan’s coastal waters. Outfitted with a gps spot device, iphones, cameras, and journals, we will be documenting the experience as well as posting constant updates as to our progress.
Makeba is a 10’ 10.5” dugout sailing canoe. Carved by hand from a cotton wood tree, this boat will be setting out on its maiden voyage after close to four years of work. When set with a sail and outriggers, this short, yet sturdy boat will be ready for the open waters. Makeba was given her name after Miriam Makeba, a famous calypso singer. Her name was chosen as a link to the inspiring water adventurer Jacques Cousteau and his boat named Calypso. Mary has worked a very long time on this bulky beast and hopes you can help her do this trip right.
By contributing, you are helping to make our dream a reality. In order to make this circumnavigation a success, we will need to have reliable gear. Your support will go towards providing us with some additional boating supplies, camping equipment, safety equipment, camera gear, and food. Food and safety, being major factors here. If you are somewhere on the planned route, maybe you can even meet up with us – we’ll even buy ice cream for anyone offering up a hot shower!
