Trespassers: The Story...
This is narrative music video for the song 'Trespassers' by the Glasgow-based band, the State Broadcasters, conceived and directed by Jessica Ashman.Trespassers is the story of a lonely "moth" (otherwise known as Moth Man). Unable to get his fix of light from a dingy attic room, he ventures out into the big, bad city in search of illumination. The city doesn't take too kindly to Moth Man's flapping, so, afraid and alone, he takes refuge in a forest on the edge of town. Suddenly a glow appears deep in the forest...has Moth Man found his light?

This is a live-action film combined with stop-motion animation, which will be shot on location and in a studio in London at the end of March 2012.
The project is co-produced by Anna Odell (Fixing Luka, Battenberg) and Michael Berliner of Pico Pictures and is a co-production with Limelight Film and Arts Awards/Spotlight UK.
About Us
Jessica's previous film, Fixing Luka, won the Scottish-BAFTA for animation in 2011, was nominated for two New Talent BAFTA awards and has picked up numerous other awards. From it's first festival screening at the Cannes In A Van film festival (picking up two wee cheeky Van D'or awards along the way!), it's since gone on to be screened at many other film festivals worldwide, including Edinburgh International Film Festival, Encounters International Film Festival (Bristol), Anima Mundi (Brazil) and Rushes Soho Shorts (London).
The State Broadcasters are made up of Graeme Black, Pete MacDonald, Fergus MacDonald, Gill Fleetwood, Cameron Maxwell and Susan Appelbe. Formed in 2004, The State Broadcasters create Americana tinged folk indie pop full of bittersweet loveliness. Pete MacDonald composed the New Talent BAFTA winning score for Fixing Luka, drawing on the band themselves to perform for the soundtrack.
The film itself will draw on the talents of the various creatives who make up That Lovely Lot.
Who are That Lovely Lot? They are the emerging film-making collective made up of the (lovely) team who created Fixing Luka. That Lovely Lot consist of animator and director, Jessica Ashman, animator and modelmaker, Nicola Welbourne, modelmaker and CGI animator, Claire Thacker, model-maker and designer, Judith Johnston, cinematographer, Ruan Suess, CGI wizard, James Houston and producer, Anna Odell.
A little history about our collective (are you sitting comfortably?): Anna and Jessica became friends whilst working at Glasgow based design company ISO in 2009 and started to get overly excited about making awesome stuff together. ISO is also where Jessica met filmmaker, James Houston. Shortly after her time at ISO, Jessica went on to work on the BBC Scotland animated TV series, Ooglies, where she met Ruan, Nicola and Judith, not to mention a whole load of other insanely talented folk who have helped with various That Lovely Lot projects. So, when Jessica was commissioned to make Fixing Luka in 2010, she called on all of these people (and more) and they have been planning film-making shenanigans ever since.
That Lovely Lot are a bunch of creatives who are passionate about making tactile, emotional and visually arresting films. The State Broadcasters are a bunch of talented musicians creating beautifully lush and poignant music. It makes perfect sense that we make a music video together!
As well as the combined talents above, Michael Berliner has been brought on board to produce the live-action section of this video. An incredibly successful award winning producer, (on such shorts as Painkiller and the viral sensation, School Portrait), Michael will be helping us to get the very best out of our video.
The Impact
The State Broadcasters are about to release their second album entitled Ghosts We Must Carry. This film will help to raise the profile of the band and the album via an online release. The band have been championed by BBC 6 Music's Gideon Coe and Marc Riley, having twice performed on Marc Riley's evening slot. Their debut album, The Ship and the Iceberg, gained glowing reviews from Uncut Magazine ("A dazzling debut" ****), The List ("...will melt the stoniest heart. Great stuff") and The Skinny.
The film will also raise the profile of That Lovely Lot, with the video for Trespassers being the collectives first major project together since Fixing Luka. This film is something we aim to really push online and at festivals worldwide, to help gain exposure to our talents as a group.
And of course, making this video will achieve a very important thing: helping Moth-Man to find his light!
What We Need
We have a great cast and crew working on the project and everyone involved is giving their time for free and we mean everyone from the director, producers, camera person, runner to the Moth Man himself! An incredibly generous and committed group of people, we’re sure you’ll agree. We do however need to get everyone to and from the set and feed and water everyone so £1100 enables us to do this.
We also need equipment – cameras, lights, grips and consumables for a 2-day live action shoot and 4-day animation shoot. Plus a van and diesel to move the kit from location to location. We need £1500 for this.
That Lovely Lot model-makers will be creating some beautiful pieces for the film. If you’ve seen Fixing Luka you’ll know the level of intricacy and beauty we’re aiming for with both the models and some show-stopping costumes that will give Ga-Ga a run for her money - £600 enables us to do this.
The film opens in a dark and dusty attic and finishes in the depths of the forest. We’re on the hunt for some London based locations and these will come with a fee and a permit. We’ll need £350 to cover this.
Following the shoot we’ll need to edit the film and then there’s a bit of post-production work to do - that means making the final picture look colourful and cinematic. We’ll need £450 to cover this.
We have to insure everyone and everything to do with the film. We’ll need £200 for that!
= Total £4060 ($6452)
If we don’t reach our target we’ll have to revise our story to fit the money raised, for example we may have to rethink the story to work in 1 location or shoot everything in a studio which we currently have in-kind from the great guys at Limelight Film and Arts Awards. Whatever happens this project will go ahead!
