Touching Stories brings storytelling to life for people with developmental disabilities by integrating a variety of multisensory stimuli into each story kit.
Who we help
Stories are how we know our world -- they are the way we learn about each other and the way we learn about ourselves. For people with significant development disabilities, the world can be too small and too quiet because they don't have the language for stories.
What are "Touching Stories?"
Touching Stories helps people communicate and connect with others through story. We have been telling special, multi-sensory stories to adults and kids with developmental disabilities since 2011. The story kits we create allow people to enter the world of story through things they touch, smell and manipulate. When we tell these tales we see their faces light up as they understand and connect with our stories, and it's an amazing gift.
Who we are
We are a small non-profit organization, made up entirely of people who donate our time, energy and resources to making these stories happen. But we need your help. We want to continue to provide our unique stories to as many people as possible, and we are looking for your support to fund ten new story kits to be distributed to day programs, schools and libraries so that more people can know and hear our stories.
These kits, made of high-quality materials mounted to sturdy canvas boards are costly to create. We spend hundreds of both dollars and hours developing new stories that will engage, delight and teach the special people we serve. Any funds donated above our funding goal means more story kits we are able to donate to a waiting school or agency.
We want our program to be available to anyone who can benefit. We donate our story kits to agencies that serve people with developmental disabilities so that these stories can be told over and over again. Each kit comes with 2 stories and a dvd which quickly and easily demonstrates how to use each of the manipulatives. The training video is an essential piece of each kit, so that those telling the story can learn how to tell them in the same way every time. Through repetition, people with developmental disabilities can increase their vocabulary, understand communication, learn to predict what will happen next, and make connection to the stories within their own experience.
We are the only organization in the United States doing this work
If we can't tell the stories, they simply won't ever be told, and the world for people with developmental disabiltiies will remain a little smaller; a little quieter.
What We Need & What You Get
The money you donate will help us develop, produce and distribute free of charge 10 Touching Stories kits. Developing stories that integrate all of the senses while working within the limitations faced by people with developmental disabilities involves a lot of trial and error, but once created, these kits can be replicated and made available at a much lower cost. Each Kit contains 2 new stories and a training video. These ten kits can bring story to hundreds of people who have never been part of the world of story before. In addition, your donation will help us produce training videos so that those who work and live with people with disabilities can learn how to tell these stories. This instructional video allows us to get these stories in more hands and allows many more people to benefit from our stories.
What your money pays for:
$7500 for the development, production and distribution of new stories with a unique training video for each new story.
$1500 to replicate and distribute additional story kits and videos. Each dollar we make in excess of our goal helps us get that many more story kits in to that many more hands.
We want the people we help to know who is helping us! As a supporter of this program you’ll be recognized for your donation: a credit on our videos... your company's name and logo on one of our story kit pages... or on the bags that our story kits come in. With some donations, we'll even name a title character after someone special for you and let you decide who will get the story kits!
We are a 501(c)(3) charity, which means donations to our campaign can be tax-deductible --CHOOSE THE PAYPAL OPTION WHEN MAKING YOUR DONATION TO RECEIVE YOUR TAX DEDUCTION.
