The Project
I'm really excited to record my 2nd full length album and I'd like to invite you to be a part of the community that will help make that possible.
This new album will be something really special.
There are a lot of great perks too, and I look forward to serenading you, taking your portraits, cooking for you and playing private shows for you. You're the reason I make music and I can't wait to share it with you.
The Plan
The songs are written, but the arrangements aren't all set. That will leave some room for the creative process in the studio. There are 14 tunes.
All recording will take place at Essential Sessions Studios (www.essentialsessions.com) The owner, Brad Matala, engaged my non-profit. MusicWorks MN, in partnership around recording projects for our work creating new music for hope and healing.
The musicians will all be Twin Cities locals that I've met through various networks or the studio. This will allow me to record in a timely fashion with high quality. The players on this list are among the very best musicians in the state. Most are nationally and internationally acclaimed, recipients of fellowships and awards, and are highly respected members of the Minnesota music community.
Guitar and Vocals - Me
Bass - Matt Blake (www.williamwithin.com)
Percussion - Marc Anderson (http://www.marcanderson.com/)

Your Support Really Means a Lot
I feel like over the past few years we've started to build a community of friends, family, fans, and musicians who have been brought together by this music. I've seen you out at shows, I notice you "liking" and commenting on social media, and most of all I've heard from you how much you enjoyed the last album and are looking forward to the next. All of you, in this little musical community of ours, are the reason I make music. Your support really means a lot, because it allows me to do what I truly love to do...that's a profound gift and I thank you for it.
I'll see you at the CD release party.
Other Ways You Can Help
Some of you may want to help, but cash is tight at the moment...I get it, no problem. You can share the link to this project out to your friends and co-workers and urge them to become a supporter! That's free, and super helpful.
The best contacts are personal ones though...so if you know someone who would really like my music, take a minute and send them an email, phone call, or talk to them in person about this project. Let them know they can pre-order the music and direct them to this website.
This project is only going to succeed because we reached out to others and made it happen together.
About 'Home in the Heartland'
This will be my second full-length album, the first being 'The Moments Between' (www.cheesebrowmusic.com) which was released in 2011. The songs in this collection are more upbeat and less cerebral than the last album, focusing instead on honesty and simplicity in lyrics and greater diversity in instrumental style.
The stories and inspiration for these songs are drawn from the beautiful and absurd moments of our rapidly growing family over the last few years. Having kids really does change everything, having two changes everything fourfold. I wanted to share some of the thoughts and feelings that have come to me as our house has become a home. It's a place that has grown with us. We try to make it an open, warm place, always full with friends to share a home-cooked meal, a place to buckle down and accomplish the serious work of life, to be nothing more or less than who you are. and a place filled with plenty of laughter. A tall order, but we've been able to manage pretty well so far. We make this home in Minnesota along with many of our family and friends.
Minnesota itself is the second source of inspiration. I've lived here all my life and have no intention of living anywhere else. The beauty of the natural features runs deep...it's more subtle than the Grand Canyon or Pike's Peak. The beauty here is marked by a simple calm, almost defined by its sparseness and transience. No season lasts more than a few weeks here, even winter...we all know that early February winter is a lot different than late February winter. Again, not something a vistor might pick up on, but the subtle beauty is there and it produces ever new wonderous things to behold. There's plenty to explore and it's a great place to raise a family. So that's what we're doing.
These simple, honest songs, from the beautiful to the absurd, from the subtle to the "pretty nice" are really written for all of us who are daily making our home in the heartland.
