This is Reality follows STAVROS, a Greek immigrant in NYC who works for the Greek mafia in Astoria, Queens. Stavros carries a lonely and austere life, but things will change when his daughter Sofía misteriously disappears back in Athens, where she lives. Sofía is a political activist engaged in the protests against the Greek Government's austerity measures. To find out what happened to his daughter, Stavros will need the help of his boss, Irene, the head of the Greek mafia in Queens. But Irene never does a favor without expecting another one in return.
ABOUT FELIPE VARA DE REY
I was born in Madrid in 1979. I graduated in Political Sciences and worked for five years as a social researcher, but my life took a new direction when I attended Madrid’s Film Institute (NIC) to study Cinematography and Screenwriting. I also participated in an International Workshop on Screenwriting at the prestigious EICTV in San Antonio de Los Baños, Cuba.
Right after I finished film school, I was co-founder -with the best possible partners!- of Tócalasam Laboratorio Creativo, an independent production company based in Madrid, where I wrote and directed many pieces as head of the creative department.
In 2011, I received a Fulbright Scholarship and moved to New York City, where I'm currently attending the 2nd year of NYU’s Graduate Program in Filmmaking.
I'm also left-handed.
Here are some of the films I've written and directed; feel free to check them out:
This is Reality is my pre-thesis project at NYU. We will be shooting for a week in January in S16mm, and all the effort will turn into a 15 minute long film that I intend to send to Festivals all around the world.
The film, as all my previous works, will be registered under a Creative Commons license, because I strongly believe in the individual and social benefits of sharing cultural products with the community.
THE CAST AND THE CREW
The cast of This is Reality is comprised of a group of extraordinarily talented Greek-speaking actors based in New York City.
As for the crew, This is Reality has succeded in putting together a diverse crew of young and enthusiastic filmmakers; some of them are NYU Graduate Film students, others are profesionals already settled either in the Spanish or the American Industry.

Every crew member involved in this project will work at no cost, and all the actors will defer their salaries. Without their generosity, the film would be impossible to make. NYU also gives us a full package of light and grip equipment, which is great, but we still need more resources to make the film happen. Filmmaking is very expensive.
This is why we would love to get your help. We're hoping to raise $10,000 in 30 days through this indiegogo crowdfunding campaign.
With the money we raise we will try to cover:
- Transportation expenses
- Meals and craft services for the cast and crew
- Location fees
- Equipment rentals
- Props and costumes
- Insurance and permits
- Film processing in a professional lab
It'd be fantastic to reach our funding goal, but if we don't, we will still move on and try to make the best film we can, with the resources we have.
I'm aware that this is not the best time to contribute financially to any project. If you can't fund the film, please don't! There are many ways you can help us make it happen: share this video on Facebook and twitter, talk about the project with your friends, help us spread the word.
Everything counts and we'll be extremely grateful of any help we can get.
