Cardboard Playhouse is a non-profit, educational theatre organization, dedicated to creating a new generation of theatergoers and promoting a greater understanding of the performing arts. Cardboard Playhouse does this by raising the standards of theatrical practice and providing an environment where youth of all ages feel confident and comfortable expressing themselves as artists and in their daily lives.
Cardboard Playhouse has been operating as an Albuquerque based, community, youth theatre organization since 2005. We are committed full time to creating artistic opportunities for Albuquerque youth. Our rehearsal and performance process is open to children of all ages and backgrounds, with a particularly strong effort towards reaching youth artists that do not have the same opportunities and artistic possibilities within their school or family efforts. Since many educational institutes in our community have had to severely cut arts programming in recent years, one of our largest goals is to further our success in bringing theatre to the students of these underprivileged schools through performances and workshops.
Cardboard Playhouse believes strongly in the power of theatre arts to instill stronger community roots, educational desires, self-esteem, and imaginative possibilities for today's youth. We believe it is our responsibility as teachers and theatre artists to create opportunities for children and young adults to express themselves and reach their furthest potential in a safe and caring environment. We understand that these goals can seem lofty, especially to many underprivileged youth, but that without a strong and fulfilling sense of community responsibility, a majority of young adults lack faith in themselves and their own environment. Cardboard Playhouse uses a variety of approaches and techniques to teach Albuquerque's youth the possibilities for their own lives, and how art can reflect positively on a community as a whole.
With your contribution, Cardboard Playhouse will have the ability to strengthen our outreach efforts towards raising awareness of the auditions, classes, and opportunities that are offered to Albuquerque youth, especially those who have had very little exposure to the performing arts. Although some of the efforts are through marketing and a stronger web presence, the most effective efforts are when Cardboard Playhouse is able to bring our productions into the public schools free of charge. There are very few students in our community that have had the experience of seeing a live theatrical performance, however, even fewer have had the inspirational opportunity of seeing a production that features students of their same age range and cultural background. We have found this reflection to be an important part of a students first experience with the performing arts. Cardboard Playhouse, with your generous support, will be providing more opportunities for students to not only grow as artists, but experience a heightened sense of esteem and expression, whether this be as a first time audience, or through the development as young theatre artists.
