THELONIOUS HANDS is a Biopic based around Frank London Brown’s article ‘Man More than Myth: A Profile of Thelonious Sphere Monk,’ for DownBeat Magazine 1958.
As the film unfolds, Frank London Brown (Lead Character) has the unique opportunity to introduce the masses to Thelonious Monk (famous U.S Jazz Pianist). Thelonious Monk (Second Lead) has just come out of a musical slump (after loosing his cabaret card, essential for working in the New York Jazz scene) and is finally being recognized as Critics’ Choice Musician Of The Year.
Frank London Brown must separate both his feelings of praise about Thelonious and his music, as well as popular depictions of Thelonious as unreliable and eccentric, to tell a complete and objective story of the genius behind the Bebop era of Modern Jazz music. As he finds himself writing the article, Frank London Brown comes across so many unexpected variables which not only influence his style of writing but in the end give him a greater understanding and appreciation for uninhibited creativity. In the end, he finds himself captured behind the music of Thelonious and his unique set of Hands, which were the blueprint for Jazz music as a whole.
