Hi, I'm Rainy Kerwin, the writer-director of The Wedding Invitation. My producing partner, Narmar Hanna (winner, 2012 Vegas CineFest International) and I are currently funding The Wedding Invitation, a female-driven romantic comedy about chasing love. It is A Film for Women, by Women, that will entertain, inspire and make you laugh.
This project is very dear to my heart. It encompasses the three things that I am most passionate about: creating, empowering women and giving back. And it is for those three reasons that we launched this campaign. Synchronistically, the story of The Wedding Invitation is a comedy about self-empowerment and so is my journey in getting this film produced (see more below under My Journey with the script.)
The entire crew and lead cast will be women.
Last year, of the top 250 grossing films, women accounted for only 18% of the writers, directors, producers and editors combined. And only 7% of directors. We're determined to up those numbers. We have an audience. We have a voice. And we have the talent. Women in Hollywood are a growing force. Join us!

LUCY - An adorable dork that you can't help but root for. She's definitely neurotic at times. A marketing genius -- she's great at her job. She's addicted to her post-it notes, highliters and her old-school day planner. Her style is girly-vintage with a dash of hipster. She loves dresses and boots and values fashion. Think Zooey Deschanel's wardrobe in New Girl.
RYANN - A sassy tomboy with a kind heart and a witty tongue. She still lives like she's in college -- listening to classic rock on vinyl from her shag rug in her messy apartment. Her frugalness is somehow charming. Her style is casual, laid back, jeans and t-shirts and sweat pants, a ponytail and no make up.
NECTER - She's not your typical model. Simple at times, she sees a silver lining in everything. Her beauty can occasionally attract the wrong type of guy. But underneath this gorgeous facade, she's a real person. A basketball-loving, potty mouth girl waiting to let loose. She is a fashionista who can throw on a silk, scoop-neck dress for breakfast and look like a million bucks.
We want to give back to the community of women that supports other women. That’s why we will be donating 5% of the film's net profits to 10 women’s charities and organizations that help empower, inspire and heal women.

The Wedding Invitation is the story of three single thirty-somethings and their plight to find their soul mates. They must track them down, hit on them and bring them to the wedding of the year… in one week! Yikes! Their mission, splattered with drunken-dry-heaving-walk-of-shame moments will require them to break all of the Dating 101 Rules to make it happen. Why this week? Because this is the week that they stop waiting for men to choose them. This is the week they take back their control. This week, they make their own fate. It's awkward and embarrassing and cringeworthy-- but with a dose of courage, the support of their girlfriends and a few shots of tequila-- anything's possible.

Every single penny raised will go directly to the production of The Wedding Invitation. The funds will be spent on equipment rentals, set locations, permits, set decoration, wardrobe, hair, make-up, editing, post-production, salaries of female crew and cast, meals and everything in between!
We are passionate and creative filmmakers who can make this film for $100,000-- and at the same time, make it look like it was shot for much more. We have a lot of creative ways to drastically improve the production value. Plus we have a lot of our own equipment, including two cameras as well as sound equipment. With every extra dollar we raise, we increase the production value, level of talent and the budget for marketing to get this film out to the world and increase the dollar amount that we donate to charity.
With any feature film, production value increases as the budget increases. Here are some budget levels.
$65,000 - low budget feature film set in Los Angeles
$100,000 - low budget feature film set in Los Angeles w/money for post production
$200,000 - better locations, set dec, editing and production value
$300,000 - better level of crew, talent, production value and final product
$400,000 - better level of all of the above plus $ for advertising and marketing
$500,000 - star names, great production value and all set in NYC!

I wrote this script because I believe in the message and I wanted to take more control in my career and my life. But unfortunately the entertainment business is slow. You’re always waiting on other people to make a decision, to agree to finance it, produce it, direct it, star in it. And since this business is run predominantly by men-- men who weren’t excited about a female-driven comedy-- I was stuck.
Yet women LOVED it and signed on to get it made. Maren Olson (Short Term 12) of Traction (Half Nelson) was on board to get it financed, set distribution and facilitate domestic and foreign sales. Sarah Platt (assoc. prod. Source Code with Jake Gyllenhaal and Michelle Monaghan) was set to co-produce it with me. And top casting director, Jenn Smith (Aquila Wood casting) attached herself to the project. Sara Risher at ChickFlick Productions was interested and the project quickly grew to a $15M dollar production.
But when it came to the money, men said
no. They didn’t like it, they didn’t get
it, they were offended by it. Because, until Bridesmaids came out, the term female-driven comedy was not a
colloquialism. Men didn’t know what to make of an entirely female lead cast in
a comedy-- especially since foreign value for female actors was well below that of male actors. So in a town with a lot of talk, I decided to DO. And not to let male Hollywood decide my
fate. So, I’m taking my control back and
doing what I believe in. I’m leaping
and KNOWING that the net will appear because this is a story and a message whose
time has come.

It's Raining Films will be producing the film. IRF also produced Strawberries (which received distribution at the Feel Good Film Festival) and is the production company attached to the upcoming feature films Baden and Dead Between LA & Vegas.
With a strong team of people and support behind this project, we feel very confident in its success. The main obstacle that we can foresee is distribution of our film-- getting it out to the people so that it can be a success. We're tackling that challenge head-on by planning a grassroots campaign through social media, cross-promotion and most importantly through this site and generous donors who are finding out about our project early and spreading the word.
We're also planning a road tour across the US and Canada to roll out the film. We'll be emulating the same model used to launch the movie My Big Fat Greek Wedding. We'll screen the movie and do a special Q&A for the audience.
Through the production company, It's Raining Films, we've cultivated relationships with domestic and foreign sales agents-- the people who actually sell the film in the US, Canada and foreign territories. Luckily we have a very clear target audience: Women. All of our marketing through social media and advertising will be aimed at Women.
