1242 pacific productions is raising money for a June 2012 production of the wall: a story of the land, written and directed by Noelle Ghoussaini. The performances will take place in various locations in Brooklyn. There will be live music, shadow puppetry and of course – an epic story!
Raising funds for this project will enable us to bring political, evocative theatre to non-traditional spaces, such as a community garden and old public baths at a low-cost and for free. We will also have a special performance just for high school playwriting and theatre students.
What the wall is about:
the wall is an allegorical, science-fiction performance piece that explores a projected future society, depleted of the earth’s resources. In this society, the dominant community, living in the Vast Lands, live off of their oppressed neighbors by confining them within Honeycomb Reserves (walled-off communities) and using their energy to sustain their more luxurious lifestyle. The piece explores the perspectives of inhabitants on both side of the wall and the external and internal barriers each of them face in relation to the imposing structure that separates their communities.
the wall was inspired by exploring the personal and political motivations of barriers and boundaries that have been created throughout history. Then, asking the question: what are the roots and effects of internal and external barriers?
An excerpt of the piece was performed in June of 2011 at La Mama Theatre and in December of 2011 at a site-specific location in Brooklyn, NY. Most recently, the the play received a staged reading at Judson Memorial Church's MagicTime series in February of 2012.
