What's the deal?Starting in September 2012, Dominic Smith, Andy Robinson, Josh Orem and Miguel Ortiz will embark on a South American bicycle tour leaving from Los Angeles, California and proceeding through 10 countries before landing in Brazil, documenting everything in real-time on the website RidetoRio.com and a forthcoming feature documentary The Ride to Rio.
One of the main goals of our trip is an attempt to alleviate some of the stereotypes we in North America and Europe have toward South and Central America and capture that on film. We believe that most people in the world are good-natured and we hope to show that in the film. Either that, or we'll find out all the stereotypes are true and end up working on a cocaine plantation somewhere in the jungles of South America.... regardless, it will be a thrilling rollercoaster of a ride, showing the challenges of unsupported bicycle touring in a way never before possible. Improvised camping, unknown languages, unreliable maps, colorful locals, scary border crossings, water scarcity, gorgeous vistas, and dangerous third world roads and thanks to recent advances in technology we'll be able to capture it all.
As you can imagine, taking 6 months out of our lives is not easy to do, nor is it cheap and we've be working and saving as much as possible over the last year and a half to be able to do this. We're not asking you to donate to our six month vacation, obviously, we need your donations to help this one-of-a-kind film get made!
Check out our Facebook page at www.facebook.com/ridetorio for more information on the project and to follow the trip along in realtime! We're extremely excited about our adventure and look forward to sharing it with you!
The costs involved with making the film will be the main strain on us, so if you want to see this film get made and experience the ride with us PLEASE donate, even the smallest donations can help make it happen!
EVERYONE who donates to us will get a copy of the finished film in 2013 on DVD!
Other Ways You Can Help
Tell people about the trip! Share the Facebook page and stories we update, or simply send us kind words while we're on the road. It's going to be a tough journey and every little thing will help!
Many thanks to the amazingly talented Malcolm Middleton for letting us use his song "Red Travellin' Socks"
