A Brief SummaryI'm an experienced forager, working with wild plants as a gateway for exploring issues connected with sustainability, ecology, mental and physical health, spirituality, creativity, and life purpose. My supporting website will be a resource packed full of free information on Wild Food, what you can do with it, and free videos regardless of whether or not you wish to donate.
Foraging for me is more than just a trendy middle class hobby, it is a vocation. After 22 years of wild food research I feel that the time is uniquely right to apply those skills to a complete and totally immersive wild food living experiment as a means to explore some profound and fundamental issues connected with how we, as a species, live. What is it like to walk in the foot-steps of our hunter-gather ancestors in a modern context? Is it even possible? Does the question even make sense? I think that to live (or even to attempt, however inadequately) in the manner of a hunter gather, reflecting a way of life, a way of being, a way of thinking, a way of relating to a world that was inherently sustainable - that is, that could be perpetuated almost indefinitely - has its own validity. And that, ultimately, is why it is worth doing, and something I hope you will help me achieve. I’m under no illusion that it will be easy; far from it. Yet I want to tread that path and share the lessons learnt along the way. Throughout the year I shall be inviting various members of the public to join me for 2-7 day periods to directly experience the project themselves.
What I Need & What You GetThe sheer unrelenting foraging, processing, cooking, travelling, and researching required to succeed in a project of this magnitude will require a complete focus of time and effort. There will be no time to work to cover living and travel expenses, no time to work to raise the funds to analyse wild foods for bio-accumulated toxic substances, no time to work to get the money to fund a dedicated base of operations. A careful breakdown of costs has shown me that the raising of only £12000 will lay a firm and sure foundation from which this project can grow and ultimately succeed.
At this stage I have to believe that with your kind and generous support funds we will reach the required target. In the event that they do not, the project will continue as planned for as long as possible whilst endeavouring to secure funds from other sources for its continuation and successful completion.
The ImpactWe have all played the "What if?" game, imagining what it would be like - including the benefit to ourselves and others - if we did a specific thing every day, or simply more often. I think that to turn such hypothetical imaginings into a living, breathing and vibrant reality we need to draw on our own unique skills, gifts and talents. In my case, for whatever mysterious reason, my unique sphere of skill and activity lies within the world of foraging and wild food. So-called food security is a perennial issue and, indeed, issues concerning food, and the way we as human beings feed ourselves are of profound importance in an apparent finite world of dwindling resources and growing populations. Given its ancient pedigree, an exploration focussing on wild food and foraging, in particular, will throw up valuable insights in such a context.
Other Ways You Can HelpIf you can't help financially, then encouragement and support in other ways can be priceless. Following my blog, reposting, following me on facebook and twitter and re-tweeting, contributing supportive comments on both would all be deeply and sincerely appreciated. Please feel free to share this campaign on your social network of choice.
