The Odyssey Storytelling Project

Help Odysseus get home to Ithaca by funding a 12-hour live telling of Homer's Odyssey. The whole thing from Circe to Penelope, the way it was meant to be heard.

Eighteen storytellers - Twelve hours - One timeless epic tale

Help us bring Odysseus home!

On June 16, 2012, Ottawa StoryTellers is presenting a 12-hour performance of Homer’s Odyssey, bringing the greatest epic in Western culture to the National Arts Centre Fourth Stage in an unprecedented live performance. Involving 18 storytellers, 3 directors, and a multitude of resources, a show of this scope will easily cost more than a small arts organization can handle on its own, so OST is embarking on a fundraising campaign of a scale far and beyond anything it has attempted in the past, and we need your help.

Ottawa StoryTellers was founded over 25 years ago by a group of 7 people devoted to telling stories. Since then it has grown to be one of the largest groups in Canada dedicated to the art of oral storytelling. Every year OST produces over 100 events ranging from the monthly story swap, where new tellers can get started, to the Ottawa International Storytelling Festival, which presents the best Canada and the world has to offer. Started in 2001, the Fourth Stage Series at the National Arts Centre has showcased the best of local and national storytellers performing the most thrilling and captivating tales around.

The Odyssey Project marks a turning point for OST. Although Homer's works are part of our cultural consciousness, it is extremely rare to have an opportunity to hear his stories told aloud, the way they were meant to be! OST has been a pioneer in the telling of epic tales, but this show is on a whole other scale. Every book of Homer's Odyssey, from Circe's trickery and the Cyclops' murderous rampage to the long awaited reunion of Odysseus and Penelope told in one day by 18 of the very best storytellers in Ottawa. This is a truly unique production that we can confidently say will be a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Even with all of OST's successes, we are still a small arts group and we depend heavily on grants and other forms of sponsorship to fund our activities. OST recently lost one of our major funders, leaving us with a substantial shortfall to make up. A show the size of the Odyssey is very expensive to produce. Venue rental, publicity costs, performers fees, administration costs - it all adds up. We simply can't cover all the costs from ticket sales alone. We really need the support of the community to make this project possible. All of the funds raised will go toward supporting Ottawa StoryTellers in this telling of Homer's great epic.

We’ve been very fortunate to receive a number of donations from businesses, artists, writers, and storytellers to provide you with some fantastic perks to thank you for your support. Please check out the exciting items we’ve gathered with an eye towards the theme of the Odyssey and an epic journey.

We hope that you will decide to be a part of this exciting project, and help us to bring Odysseus home. For more about OST and our activities please visit http://www.ottawastorytellers.ca
