Detroit's Next Urban Chef
Detroit's Next Urban Chef is a food system education project that excites high school students to learn about how food happens using culinary workshops with professional chefs. At Next Urban Chef we believe that passionate young cooks deserve a venue to share their talent & passion, the same as any other creative or athletic endeavor. So, we created an annual Iron Chef-style competition for young aspiring amateur chefs called Detroit's Next Urban Chef.
We also believe that our next generation of foodies, food entrepreneurs, and home cooks need to know the bounty of Michigan agriculture and how cooking local can positively impact our economy, environment, and nutrition. Each culinary workshop is complimented by educational activities that teach our students about how and why to choose local whenever possible.
Cooking is a creative and fun pursuit that can be enjoyed for a lifetime. We believe that food made from whole, local ingredients is healthier for our bodies and our community than prepared and processed alternatives. We also believe that there are satisfying career possibilities for those who are inclined to pursue them. We want to discover the next generation of talented Detroit born chefs!
Kickin' It Up A Notch!
Last year’s first Next Urban Chef finals were a huge success and undoubtedly the highlight event at the Apple Gala Festival held at Eastern Market last October (watch the YouTube video above for more on that event.)
In our 2nd year, 4 teams will be selected for the final round that takes place on September 15th in Detroit's famed Eastern Market. Teams of three young chefs teamed with experienced professional chefs, will battle it out to claim the title of Detroit's Next Urban Chef 2012. Working together, each team will create a unique menu using fresh, local ingredients for a panel of judges. Creating a three-course meal. The Next Urban Chef event provides a great learning experience for the young cooks about teamwork, leadership, and the importance of healthy and local eating habits. We believe Detroit's Next Urban Chefs will inspire and engage people of all ages.
You Can Make A Difference Too!
Detroit's Next Urban Chef is an all-volunteer effort. The co-creators volunteer their time & expertise, as do the professional chef/coaches who also make their kitchens available to their youthful counterparts at no cost. Even the parents of contestants get involved to help out!
The volunteering can't cover it all unfortunately, and so we are humbly asking for your support in this year's Detroit's Next Urban Chef 2012 event to make it even bigger and better.
Your contribution will be used to: Buy food & supplies for practice sessions as well as for the event itself, rent professional kitchen equipment for the final event, purchase prizes for the winners & runners up, provide audio/video and other professional services needed for the event. We are fortunate to be sponsored by Eastern Market Corporation (http://www.detroiteasternmarket.com) a 510(c)3 corporation, so your contribution is tax deductible.
We think we've got some tasty incentives to please you supporting this amazing event! Check out our campaign, and support us in any way you can. See you all September 15th!!!
