THE STORY OF "THE NEXT THING" (TNT)
The Next Thing: Art in the 21st Century is a collection of illustrated essays written by a broad range of world renowned artists and theorists all attempting to anticipate the aesthetic sensibility that will define our century.
The list of contributors include: Stelarc (Australia), Salima Hashmi (Pakistan), Liliana Porter (Argentina/U.S.), Ana Tiscornia (Uruguay/U.S.), Mieke Bal (Neatherlands), Sue "Johnny" Golding (England), Glenn Harper (U.S.), Polona Tratnik (Slovenia), Jan Castro (U.S.), Peng Feng (China), Hagi Kenaan (Israel), Mark Axelrod (U.S.)
Among those involved in this book, The Next Thing was quickly nicknamed "TNT"... not only a good sounding acronym but also a reflection on our confidence on the explosive nature of this project and its promise as one of the major editorial events of the century.
This international anthology examines current artistic manifestations: from "post-human" installations, to transgenic experimentations, from tele-presence performance, to nano-design, virtual urbanism or "guerilla art", to name but a few contemporary tendencies that are redefining both the boundaries of Meaning and what it means to be Human in the 21st century.
Indeed, The Next Thing will become a unique forum for current critical discussions about contemporary art and will also be a reference point for artists and thinkers of the future. The Next Thing will not only offer a high quality visual gateway into the work of contemporary trailblazing artists but it will also provide an interdisciplinary framework to examine the intellectual and emotional underpinnings of our current revolution in the Arts.
What We Need & What You Get
If you read this far, YOU are the one we are counting on...
Art has always relied on those who not only shared the vision but also were able to support it. We intend to turn this book about contemporary and future art into an art object itself both in terms of the scope of its writing and the high quality of its illustrations. In order to achieve this goal we are raising $15,000 (for production costs) and are asking the endorsement of people like you who are intrigued by these sweeping changes in the world of art, and who cherish the value of a thoughtful and beautiful art book.
A group of institutions have already pledged their support to this publication (we are still waiting on some others) so we don't need to achieve the full $15,000 through this Indiegogo campaign. Among these institutions, we can currently list:
California State University, Los Angeles.
Claremont McKenna College
And from a group a private funders
So we are aiming at raising at least another $5,000 through this campaign
