Who we are

Oddbodies is an Arts Company based on the edge of Dartmoor in Devon.  We have many years experience of creating, producing and performing highly acclaimed theatre work which has toured all over the UK, to Europe and the USA.  Recently we have begun to develop work for film, and our first short, the darkly comic and fabulously grotesque 'Mrs Lustleigh's Fancies' was made last year with a tiny budget and an incredible team.  It won The Best Film Award on its premiere screening at Exeter's 2 Short Nights Festival and is currently being submitted to festivals around the world.  We are now working on our second short, the wonderfully colourful and curious tale of magic, martinis and maternal meddling... 

'The Nature of Angrove' - Synopsis

Angrove Laxeter, a shy and unassuming 30 year old, lives at home with his widowed and domineering mother Ashleen.  Living in an 'upper middle-class' suburb, Angrove works as an accountant, and in his spare time, practices magic tricks.  

Afraid her son will never marry, Ashleen signs him up to the dating agency The Nature of Love.  Roger Ranthorn, the oily proprietor, takes a personal interest in all his clients and views Angrove as a particular challenge.

A series of dates ensue, held at the Laxeters home and overseen by Ashleen.  Angrove endures these mis-matches, coming alive only when performing his wholly unappreciated (and occasionally inappropriate) magic tricks.

Finally, after a succession of candidates (approved by Ashleen yet clearly unsuited to Angrove), Cherry the maid reveals her hitherto suppressed feelings. Angrove has finally met his love match.  Ashleen however, is less than happy with his choice and tries to snuff out this romance before it has begun.

Emboldened by his feelings for Cherry, Angrove decides to take matters into his own hands, with extraordinary and magical results...

Style - This will be a highly stylized piece very much influenced by Magic Realism. Set in an indeterminate age but with the Art Deco look of the 1930s and 40s.

We are shooting the first week in July at our base on the edge of Dartmoor.  The script has been written, most of the cast & crew are in place, the set is being built, costumes and props are being created, rehearsals will be taking place - we just need your support...

Where your money will go...

The money you give us will be going on direct costs of production - equipment hire, insurance, travel and food expenses for cast and crew and any set, props and costumes that we can't 'beg, borrow or steal' in in-kind support.  Everyone involved is working for expenses only. We are lucky to have some studio space and some (limited) equipment already in place, and on the strength of our past work have  managed to secure in-kind support from a number of local businesses. 

But we do need money to help us make this wonderful piece. This is a unique opportunity for you to be directly involved in the making of this film.
