“The Martyr” is about an prieststruggling to confess his sins in the eyes of God. Father Dougin is driven by the need to save his illegitimate son who is currently on death-row for treason against the government.
As the story begins we follow Father Dougin early in his priesthood. He is young and naive in his faith. He has an affair with Debra, which results in the birth of Bodie. Dougin keeps this a secret and does not have an influence in the child’s life. The story fast forwards to present day where we see an agingFather Dougin, preparing to confess this sin to another priest, but he can’t do it. He realizes that he needs to make things right with his son before he can truly feel remorseful. He believes that he cannot forgive himself until he tries to save his son’s spirit as well.
Bodie grew up without a father and is on death-row for treason against the government. He released classified information to the public, which proved the government had been involved in illegal activities during the War in Iraq. Bodie is a soldier, but believes in a higher sense of morality. He believes what he did was just.
Father Dougin decides to take it upon himself to talk with Bodie and attempt to get him to confess his sin and show remorse to God, but Bodie truly believes his actions were morally correct. Dougin struggles to gain his trust and confess to Bodie that he is his father.

The driving force behind this film is the idea of truth. “The Martyr” has a theme built into it which sends out the message that living a truthful life will set you free. The burden of living with a lie of this magnitude would be hindering and detrimental to anyone’s life and soul. Mentally and emotionally the weight is lifted off of a person’s shoulders when they are able to admit their mistakes.
No one is perfect, and we understand that everyone make mistakes. This is why we believe the character as a priest only enhances our message, and heightens the stakes of this film.
