Welcome to your home at Home.
Hello there fellow burner, architect, interior designer, event planner, dreamer, partier, fighter!
What sets the Lotus Eaters' Dome apart from a mere geodesic dome shelter is our desire to create true art from the structure inside and out. We have worked hard to carefully model and plan every color, shape, and even shadows cast to present each of our visitors with an overwhelmingly inspiring experience. Additionally, we are driven by our desire to create a comforting community home base for campers to return to when they seek to be centered and calm following adventures on the Farm.
This project spawned a few months ago from the minds and bonds of three-year Atlanta-based burners Zach and Talia. We knew that with Zach's B.S. in Architecture from GT and Talia's event planning and interior space design experience we would be uniquely suited to contribute something beautiful to the burn we hold so dear. We even have a bit of burn camp experience! You probably (don't) remember us from Alchemy 2012, where we helped create the meditation-based Camp Serenia, an art project funded by the Alchemy community.
This year we hope to impact the community by providing an unforgettably artistic camp. It will be a creation to remember!
We will create a relaxing dwelling space (read: Giant Live-In Lotus Flower) that can be modified for consecutive regional and national events. The conduit-pipe, 16-foot diameter dome will be completely waterproof and filled with ground level pillows, cushions, carpets, blankets, hanging hammocks, and mind-boggling decor.
Why "The Lotus Eaters"?
Mythically, the lotus eaters dwelled on an island and spent their lives completely content to consume lotus flowers. All motivations were erased in the presence of the lotus flower--complete apathy and bliss were overwhelming.
We think it's alright to be completely content with peaceful indulgence during a burn, and we want to provide a great space to share that!
What is Alchemy?
Alchemy is an annual Georgia burn and festival. While it is under a decade old, it is an integral part of our lives as it allows for an annual release and celebration of community. A couple thousand people come together in rolling farm fields of Lafayette, Georgia to express themselves through on-site art (sculptures, paintings, flow arts, fire, what have you), observe one another, survive on their own without external resources, and share their unique talents and helping hands to create a temporary and ever-changing community. Oh, and we get pretty excited and burn a massive, beautiful wooden structure to ash. ;]
What will be going on daily at this camp?
We will also have a bit of music going to help set the mood. We update our proposed soundtrack while working on the project, you can listen in here!
We also have camp members interested in yoga, sketching, origami, fancier campstove cuisine, tea, and similar bonding hobbies that they would love to share inside and near the dome.
(We're very excited, and we need our community's help!)
We would love your help!
We would love to offer this project all on our own, but we simply cannot financially--more than that, we would like to see who else feels passionately about this project and would like to make it a reality.
Our overview budget document can be found here, though here's a quick breakdown:
- 33%: metal to construct the dome
- 25%: generator! Last to be funded, this will help us light the dome at night in a very soft and gentle manner, play our soundtrack, and power a projector. Some of these aspects can be replaced with battery-powered alternatives depending on funds.
- 42%: additional hardware and decor aspects
We can't wait to share stories and art with ya inside our giant budding lotus flower. Help make this dream a reality!
If you feel this project would be fascinating or inspirational in any way, donate! Any amount is greatly appreciated! We promise you'll enjoy the results.
Want to help in more ways?
Please feel free to share this with other Alchemy goers, architects, artists, and dream chasers!
If you have any advice, questions, ideas, or just want to chat feel free to email firstname.lastname@example.org and we'll be in touch!
If you would like to work on constructing the physical dome on-site, we would love that too! Hit us up over email or on this page so we can let you know where we are placed at the burn.
Dream on! See you on the Farms!
