We received this inspiring story from Thomas Lotito, an openly gay employee at The Department of Justice:
When Matthew was murdered, I was in middle school and barely starting to come out to myself. Like many it had a tremendous impact. Now, I’m an openly gay employee at the Department of Justice. The Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School performed scenes from “The Laramie Project” at our 2012 LGBT Pride Month celebration in the Great Hall of the Department Justice.
There’s so much about the preceding sentence that I could have never even dreamed of back in middle school; that the Department of Justice would be supportive, that students would be allowed to put on a play about this (and would want to!), not to mention that a federal hate crimes law is in place. So to me, “The Laramie Project” represents how much progress we can make in a relatively short time. There’s much more progress we have to make, but I know this play will help inspire people to have the conversations and take the action to get involved and to make things better.
