The Jeff and King Foundation
We want to commemorate the history of Black America by celebrating the excellence of future “history makers” in Black America. Throughout February, we urge Durham to show its gratitude for the youth that are working hard to achieve, despite adverse conditions.
Durham has long been commended for the educated mass of urban transplants that take residence here, finding employment at the Research Triangle Park or furthering their education at one of the many institutions of higher learning. Conversely, the city is mired by a persistent failure to improve the test-scores and graduation rates of its own high school students. Most notably is the considerable disparity between Black and white test takers. (For statistical evidence view 2011’s Preliminary ABC Data Presentation available here: http://www.dpsnc.net/news/frontpage-news/dps-releases-preliminary-abcs-test-results)
It is not our aim to highlight the negatives; rather, as college educated Black males, who excelled within Durham’s dysfunctional system, we want to celebrate the success of one rising senior who has worked diligently to counter the odds.
While many have narrowed our contributions by labeling us as “party promoters” we counter that limiting perception with the following assertion: our primary undertaking is to offset local, national, and international inequality with philanthropy and conscientious, grassroots fundraising. The formation of The Jeff and King Foundation endeavors to demonstrate our commitment to peer leadership and civic duty.
The Jeff and King Foundation aims to offer a $15,000 scholarship to a rising senior who meets the following criteria:
- Black Male
- Resident of Durham County
- Graduating Senior within the Durham Public School system
- Minimum 3.3 GPA
All applicants will need to submit the following for consideration:

- 900-word essay answering the query: What Black Man has served as the greatest inspiration in your Life? Why?
Funds will be raised throughout the month of February here and at sponsored locations/events.
*Applications will be accepted March 1st – April 30th. The award will be rewarded during the recipient’s graduation ceremony.
A panel of esteemed, Black men will review the applications (TBA).
No contribution is too small.
Thank you in advance for your continued support,
Jeff and King
