The Firelight Isle

A Cultural Fantasy Graphic Novel

The Firelight Isle is a creator-owned graphic novel that explores the depths of human culture in a fictional setting. Like Freakangels, it will be published for free on the web and then collected in print. There's much more information on the website for the project, The Firelight Isle.com

My goal for The Firelight Isle is to produce a graphic novel without compromises, and put every ounce of quality that I can into the story, the art and the design. The finished product will be a 200-300 page full-colour comic, with production values inspired by beautiful publications like Habibi and The Arrival, in which every detail of the book contributes to the atmosphere of the story. In order to achieve this, I'll be focussing intently on the writing, research, design and thumbnailing before I move onto the production of the pages themselves. I plan to document this creation process online, putting up notes, sketches, designs and illustrations as I go! You can already see the first few entries on The Firelight Isle Blog, and there's more detail about how much time each aspect of the creative process takes on the Creative Process page of thefirelightisle.com.

I'm estimating that the pre-production stage (writing, research, design and thumbnailing) will take me around 80-100 days of full time work, and the production stage (drawing and colouring the pages) will take between 400-900 days of full time work, depending on how long the project ends up being, and how smoothly it goes! As it stands I can only afford spend one day a week on The Firelight Isle, and at that pace it could take up to two years to finish the pre-production, and over a decade to finish the production! This is where you come in...
I'm self-employed, and earn enough from doing commercial artwork to make a living, but unfortunately there is very little money out there for creator owned comics. At the moment, every day I spend working on The Firelight Isle is a day during which I don't earn any income, and this is a big financial risk - but your input can help change that!

I'm looking for funding to help me complete the pre-production stage of this project - the goal is $6000, which on the current dollar-pound exchange rate works out at around minimum wage for 100 days work, 8 hours a day - just enough! That still leaves the matter of funding for the production itself, but I have a feeling that's too substantial a goal for crowd-sourcing (even at minimum wage and fastest possible production time, that would require about $25000 on top of the $6000 I'm asking for). After the pre-production is finished, I plan on using the collected concept work to seek more substantial funding from publishers, or perhaps to launch a second campaign using the interest gathered if this first campaign is successful. This also means that any money I raise for the project above the target or outside this campaign will go straight towards funding the production stage.

So, what's in it for you?

  • I can promise a great comic in return! I'm dedicated to getting this finished, whether it takes 3 years or 30, and having delivered 144 episodes of Freakangels at an average of 4 weeks out of every 5, you can be sure that I've got the dedication it requires!
  • You'll get to watch the project develop faster! I'll be posting my progress online, and with every new contributor, I can produce more material to share each week.
  • You'll be helping to back creator owned comics! Whether it's self-published or not, I intend to add The Firelight Isle to the ever growing list of creator owned material and support that sector of the industry in my own way.
  • I also want to be totally up front with every aspect of this project because I know how easy it is to mislead with crowd-funding campaigns. I will be completely open with where your money goes and what it helps me achieve!
  • And of course there are the perks! At this stage it's worth explaining that I can't offer free copies of the finished book to any but the biggest of contributors because I don't yet know who will be publishing or how much the book will cost to print and post, but hopefully the other perks will make up for this!
