Custom-made necklaces inspired by people's data
I'm Stef, a designer and software developer from London and I'm seeking your help in creating and launching the Data Necklace - a set of bespoke, laser-cut necklaces individually made for someone that displays their data in a beautiful way.
Tweets, dates, meaningul words can all be visualised in a unique way to reflect the wearer's personality, history or stories.
A Necklace that visualises how often you use the word "love" on Twitter? (Or a word of your choice...)
The "love" necklace displays an entire year of tweets by a person. The lengths of the beads indicate the number of tweets in a month. The shorter lengths indicate how often she used the word "love" that month. I can do the same for any word.
Along the sides of every other bead you'll see a single laser-etched tweet for that period. They're visible if you hold up the beads to the light, and are partially public, partially private. I like to think of them as little reminders, memories, almost like a 21st Century locket.
The design is totally personal - I download the person's tweets, run them through some software that I've writetn, and based on a particular word ("happy", "want", "amazing") the result is a laser-cut and laser-etched necklace, hand-assembled with a sterling silver chain. I had to learn how to make jewellery in the process!
This product is just past the "prototype" stage and I'm refining the design for a limited run. You'd be helping me do that.
What I need to make this happen
The prototypes you can see on the Data Necklace gallery are all made using a laser-cutter, from a variety of materials. It's expensive experimenting with a laser-cutter! The hourly rate just to be in the room is £50. Then there are the materials - silver is also expensive. So I'm looking for funds to help me experiment and perfect the designs that I'm developing.
If we reach my funding goal then I'd have enough funds to experiment and perfect the following additional designs and begin making them.
If I exceed the goal I could even buy a laser cutter, invest in marketing and design around the product and improve my chances of making this project a success.
The other designs
In addition to the Twitter Necklace I have two other designs that I'm developing.
The Felt Data Necklace
The resulting necklace can be hung in a box frame for presentation. I'm experimenting with this piece, because I am yet to perfect how to ensure that the felt does not snap, as one of the prototypes has done already.
The Text Necklace
A series of pairs of words and numeric values that are rendered as a necklace.
A set of beads matches the values (the larger the number, the longer and more bulbous the bead), and along each bead the text you've supplied is laser-etched.
The results are quite stunning. However, this is the most experimental - I need to develop and perfect the way that people supply the data, and also how I communicate with them about the potential design before it is cut, so that they are happy with it.
Why I need your support
Something that people will cherish
What's lovely about this project for me personally, is that it was a product of a Hack Day, a show at the Whitechapel Gallery and my experience on an amazing Scottish Island. Read more about the Story.
A tiny idea that I had that I wanted to make for friends and family, that lets me do something using my existing skills of software and design, but results in something that they can hold in their hands, that doesn't evaporate like all the websites I made between 1996 and 2006!
I want to make something that people will really care about and cherish.
Judging by the smiles so far, I think I'm onto something!
With your support, I'll be taking what is a prototype and turning it into a product that people can buy.
I'm able to produce a great first product straight away, the Twitter Necklace, but my ambition is to make this the first of a number of designs that I would eventually offer.
That's what you would be supporting in the long run.
Using a wide range of different types of data I hope to be able to produce very personal, data-driven designs that mean something to the wearer.
The You're All Awesome Necklace
As a thank you to all of the supporters for this project, we're making a "You're All Awesome" necklace, that incorporates the Twitter usernames and/or some tweets that visualises the collective use of the word "awesome" in your timelines. Because you all are!
Other Ways You Can Help
There's a Facebook page. You could "like" it and invite your friends to do the same.
Spread the Word by tweeting or blogging about this idea.
Give me feedback about how to make this happen.
I'm excited. I hope you'll help me do this thing, and I'm really grateful to everyone who is helping me achieve this.
