What is THE COMPLETE KINGSTON TRIO?
Dave Zorn, former broadcaster for a large Los Angeles news station, and brother of current Kingston Trio member Bill Zorn, will narrate the documentary with aplomb.
Also included in The Complete Kingston Trio Documentary will be years of footage of The Kingston Trio Fantasy Camp, started in 2000 by John Stewart and Nick Reynolds, and continued in 2009 by Bob Shane. Expect many clips of talent and hilarity.
Our mission is to tell the story, and preserve it for generations to come. With your help we can make it happen in a big way. Since Bob Shane is now the only original surviving member of The Kingston Trio, this rich history needs to be documented before it’s lost forever.
Who is THE KINGSTON TRIO?
The Kingston Trio is one of the most important musical groups of the 20th Century. Without the influence of The Kingston trio, there would not have been the opportunity for such artists as Bob Dylan, ABBA, Peter, Paul & Mary, Fleetwood Mac and The Eagles, since these artists and others credit The Kingston Trio with either directly influencing them to become musicians or for opening the doors that permitted their success.
The Kingston Trio is also credited with starting the folk movement of the 1960s. Formed in 1957, The Kingston Trio has survived the changes in music trends by maintaining the close harmonies that are the group's trademark. Using only acoustic guitars and banjos, and singing simple yet memorable melodies, The Kingston Trio revolutionized American popular music, reawakening America to its own rich folk music heritage.
Over the years, The Kingston Trio has recorded over 30 albums and won Grammys for two of them. One for Best Country & Western Performance, and one for Best Folk Presentation of the Year.
The latest honor bestowed upon the Kingston Trio is a Grammy for Lifetime Achievement, presented to the group on February 12th, 2011. Neil Portnow, The Recording Academy President/CEO stated, "It is a great honor to recognize and celebrate such a distinguished and dynamic group of honorees who have been the creators of such timeless art. These influential performers and brilliant innovators have been of great inspiration to our culture and industry. Their legendary work has left a lasting impression and will continue to influence generations to come.”
Although the members of the Kingston Trio have changed over the years, the group has remained faithful to its sound and audiences. George Grove is completing his 36th year as a member of The Kingston Trio, having joined the group in 1976. Bill Zorn was a member of the New Kingston Trio from 1972-1976 and returned in 2004 to take Bob Shane's place when Bob retired, and tenor Rick Dougherty joined the Trio in 2005 after 15 years replacing Glenn Yarbrough in The Limeliters.
The Trio that you enjoy today is the continuation of a 56-year entertainment legacy. George, Bill & Rick continue to tour thirty weeks per year and perform original Kingston Trio arrangements to an increasing number of new fans.
After every Kingston Trio performance the audience exits with the same comment: “They were wonderful and even better than I hoped they would be!”
What Are We Going To Do With the Money?
This project is a labor of love and it’s going to cost a lot of money, probably more than our Indiegogo goal. We’ve got to capture many, many interviews and that’s going to involve a lot of traveling around and flying people in and putting them up. We’re hoping to get interviews from everyone still around who credits the Kingston Trio with getting them started, and believe it, the list is very, very long.
There are also all the production costs, such as studio time, editing, manufacturing, artwork and recording costs. We’ll also need to pay for use of many film clips and obtain sync licenses for those clips.
We’ll need to pay for the script and the narration, and there will be other costs to the players involved as well. And additional costs for some of the perks we are offering.
We’ve set up incentives and other cool stuff to offer as perks. Bob Shane decided to part with quite a bit of his memorabilia to help fund this documentary. We really want you to join us in this preservation of The Kingston Trio's incredible history!
The production of this documentary will be stellar in every way. It will be so good, the History Channel, PBS, and A & E are going to want it!
If you can’t contribute, there are other ways you can help. Get the word out! Use your Facebook and Twitter, and tell your friends. Let’s do it!
