A New Home for Actors, Artists, and Audience
In Syracuse there are a host of small community theater companies, but no dedicated space devoted to community theater and performance programming. Many of the civic and private theaters in Syracuse have priced themselves out of affordability for most small or even large community theaters. Enter our project, The Central New York Playhouse:
A Unique Space with a Unique Mission
We are building a new home for Actors, Artists, and Audience. The space we have chosen is a former retail space in Shoppingtown Mall. Our 4500 complex will have 800 square feet of performance space, a full rehearsal room, a music room, a secondary cabaret area, and of course our audience area able to seat almost 200 people.
The Construction Fund Goals
But before we open we need your help. Proper construction of our stage is expensive. The stage needs to be made of fire treated wood & the curtains have to be fire retardant. That is to say nothing about tables, chairs, re-designing the entryway into the theater and curtaining a long line of windows on one side of the theater. That is why we are hoping that you will help kick start our project and help us fund it fully and beyond.
Opportunities for Hundreds of Local Actors and Artists, and Potentially Several Thousand Audience Members
Once we build our stage we have a very intense main stage schedule. Over the next 13 months we will bring 10 fully staged theatrical productions. Our productions range from farcical comedies, to poignant classics, and 3 full scale musicals. Four of our offerings will be Central New York premieres including the CNY amateur premiere of Monty Python's Spamalot taking the stage in the first weekend it will be available to community theaters in North America.
A Home for the Entire Community.
But the Central New York Playhouse is more than just one company. We will be opening up our doors to other theater companies and community organizations so they can produce and explore their art on our stage. Already we have scheduled with several community groups that will use our space, the first being Don't Feed the Actors Improv troupe who will perform 10 comedy shows here over the next 13 months, former Syracuse Post Standard Humor columnist and SALT award winning writer Jeff Kramer will bring a new sketch comedy show "Skit Happens" to our stage in 2013, the Thumbs-Up Improv festival will happen in April 2013 involving close to a dozen improv groups throughout central New York, and a Murder Mystery and Cabaret series will also fill out some nights.
So, if you help us build this stage, you are actually helping us build a home... a home for those who want to give back to the community... a new home for actors, artists, and audience. Please help us jump start this dream into a reality.
