Update: August 26th 2013
Thank you so much to the 61 contributors who've donated over $1800 and counting!
I've had a chance to meet the Begley family, and they are very thankful to everyone for their love and support with this and other initiatives being held in their honour.
Also, a big thank you to CP24 and the Bill Carroll Show for putting media attention behind this initiative, and to Sharon Gabison who has raised $900 so far through her incredible fundraising efforts. It's amazing to see the community coming together for such a worthy cause. Let's keep the donations coming in!
I don't know the Begley family–never even met them. But I do know about a hateful letter they recently received regarding their son, and about the damage it has caused.
I can't imagine being told that my child 'is a hindrance to everyone and will always be that way.' Or that I 'should take whatever non-retarded body part he possesses and donate it to science.' Or that I should 'do the right thing and move or euthanize him.' Nobody should ever have to endure that type of hate. Ever.
I want the Begley family to know that there is more love than hate in the world, and that there is a community of people who think they are amazing, their son is amazing, and they have every right to laugh, love, and play as much as they desire. They have every right to live life to its fullest.
I'd like to raise $3,500 to give them a vacation. Or a staycation. Or whatever else they think will put a smile on Max's face. Every cent of what is raised (minus Indiegogo's cut) will go to a family who could use a little love.
Lifelong memories. A 13-year old's laugh. A happy family. Good karma.
If you don't have money.
Pass this along.
