The Baseball Bond
I love Baseball stories. It makes me think of my Dad and when times were easier. I knew from the moment that I heard about this Father Son World Series, I wanted to make a good Baseball Documentary about it. Little did I know that the Documentary I ended up making turned out to be way more than just a Father Son Baseball story. Go to the imdb.com movie page! (opens new window)
One of the reasons we are using this platform is to share it directly with you. This is the new age of creativity and if you are on this site, you are now apart of it. This movie is "ours." Hollywood turned me down when I started out seeking production funds, so I buckled down, quit my job, and moved back home to make it happen. Go to Justin's Film Credits (opens new window)
Dont let the smaller budget fool you though. This movie was serious business! Trust me when I say this, but this movie is SPECIAL. Even though we are asking for contributions to finish the movie on this website, this movie will change lives.
I am a documentary film-maker that values substance over style, but we Conquered them both with this film. When its all said and done, thirty years from now, I want this film, this Baseball movie that's not really about Baseball, to be the film that built my track record of creating inspirational movies that mean something. Please dont confuse the fact that since we are asking for contributions, it means that we don't have a Theather worthy film. Here is how it started...
Why a Baseball Documentary
I decided at 27 years-old that I wanted to make quality stories that move people. So I quit my marketing job and started writing and directing shorts. I eventually worked on my first Documentary in 2009 and quickly fell in love with the format. Some of my favorite films are Murderball, Hoop Dreams, and Undefeated and I always wanted to do a story of similar fashion. All it took was checking my mail one day...the amateur baseball league that I play for sent out its magazine with a story of Fathers and Sons playing baseball together at the World Series. But I left Houston in 2007 and completely forgot about the Baseball movie.
MSBL Father Son Division
The Father Son World Series is a real. It might as well have been in the middle of a corn field because only a select few know of this event. The Father Son Division is part of a larger Amateur Baseball organization called the Men's Senior Baseball League (MSBL).There are 43,000 members that still play competitive Baseball as Adults!
**MSBL members order the Tshirt and get the film for FREE**
We get to play against ex-MLB'ers.You'll have some guys like myself that are still chasing High School dreams while playing against various levels of competition. There are over 20 Ex-Major Leaguer's that have played in the league! My Dad started playing with the MSBL in 1994 and I played my first game when they needed fill-ins, all as a 16 year old! I stopped playing in 2005 after my third knee surgery. My dad stopped playing soon after and our conversations were less frequent with no Baseball to play.
If you build it, he will come...
That's when everything came full circle...Once I solidified my film career, wouldn't you know Baseball brought us back together. I moved back to Houston and in early 2010, I saw Field of Dreams on TV one day. That was it! I was going to find his long-lost birth Father and have this George Summers fellow play catch with my Dad just like the movie! I mean how hard could it be to find a guy when all you have is a name. Full-steam ahead.
The journey was anything but simple. I was beat down in the process, yet I still managed to come out ahead. Overcoming those obstacles is what made it magical. Some Hollywood execs only dream of finding a story like this!
Characters on the team
This wasn't just about my search for George Summers. I also documented four other Fathers and Sons on our team and interviewed other Fathers and Sons on the importance Baseball has on their own lives. What I found out was that each Father and Son either built or destroyed their true life bonds on the Baseball Field.
The Father Son World Series only lasts a week, but we all play in the local area MSBL league throughout the year and that gave us the chance so shoot about 15 games to get to know the characters and film their lives. It happened to work out that both Father's that I documented have personalities that make them great character studies.
A Guitar Player and a young-hoss
Fifty year-old Buddy Graves has always wanted to be a Rock Star, but when his Dad caught him playing guitar in High School, he took the guitar from Buddy! Buddy has worked as an electrician since then...just as his Father did. Fifty year-old Richard Brinegar has always struggled to get people to understand his "firecracker" demeanor. When he's not literally fighting to defend his son on the baseball field, he shows an unexpected softer-side towards Jake.
Their respective sons behave exactly as one would expect when growing up with fathers with Type A personalities...reserved around their Dad's. Get them alone though, we get to see the real Zach Graves and Jacob Brinegar, especially on the Baseball Field. Zach only got to play one year of College Baseball because of financial reasons and Jake, well he skipped out on a Baseball future when he quit his senior year of High School Baseball to get a job...despite throwing in the low 80's as a skinny teenager.
It's a personal story
The story ended up taking a turn towards my struggle to deal with my dire emotional and spiritual state after giving up everything and moving back into my Mom's and back in the same room I had in highschool. It was part choice but mostly necessity. When the search for George Summers took drastic twists and turns, I did what any journalist would have done when presented with a story of this potential...I turned the cameras to myself!
What makes me different from other filmmaker's with a HD camera is that I was 100% transparent about my life and my relationship with my Dad. I have always wanted more from him and he has no idea how, at 3 years-old, I was able to remember him leaving my Mom and me. Surely if I made all this effort to find his birth Father, our bond could finally become more than just a "game." No matter the cost, I was making this happen.
And while this didn't start out being a "Christian Documentary," I can't hide the fact that I struggled with my faith during the process. Add to the fact that I was so intrigued by what those corn fields actually represented in Field of Dreams because the Producers left it to interpretation, it meant I had to ask for them!
So I asked the guys on the team and others where they thought the baseball players in Field of Dreams were going when they disappeared into the corn fields. Was it heaven? Was it Baseball heaven? Or was it something else??? Wait till you see some of the answers!
But by asking those questions, I was unknowingly setting myself up because as the Director and subject, I was forced to ask myself the exact same question which I was forced to answer. And here is the only storyline that I will ruin for you right now...I did finally come up with an answer that I will live by for the rest of my life and couldn’t be more proud to share it with the world.
You've never seen Amateur Baseball like this
Movies like this are very expensive to get right, but with my passion and drive, I was ready to tackle it with my crew. Technology helped. Most of the cameras we used can now be had for a thousand dollars. Plus using GoPro Helmet Cameras during Baseball Games allowed us to show you another dimension of the game. The footage is pure, a true love-letter to Baseball. My 100% amateur crew was able to deliver on capturing solid game action.
Need Hollywood now
The catch is that we actually need that Hollywood executive right now! I need to hire professionally trained editors, sound designers, and graphic artists to take our pure footage and perfect the story. That's where you come in. You are my Executive. You are the digital bridge that will allow me to skip Hollywood altogether and share this story with the world. The only way we can get a Theatrical release is by reaching our Goal. Dont you want to call your Dad or son and take them to the movie theater and see our journey together?
Footage is ready to Edit
We have over 150 hours of footage from interviews, live Baseball action, and cinema verite style shots. Of the funding goal, $3000 will go to an editor, $2000 will go to the Graphic Artist, $1000 will go to Sound, $1000 will go to Digital Transfers, $2000 will go to a Color Correctionist and the rest will go into covering the costs of custom painted Maple Baseball Bats, TOPPS cards, and T-shirts for you guys! If we reach our goal of $12,500, Indiegogo and paypal will get 7% and if we don’t hit our Goal, they take 12%. Every extra dollar that we get will go back into post-production and make the film that much more awesome for our anticipated theatrical run. IF we dont hit this goal, this movie will NOT get completed until 2014 or 2015. Please spread the word!
But lets focus on the task at hand...finishing the film! When you check out, just use Paypal.com Its that simple. And you don’t need a paypal account. Use your Visa, MasterCard, American Express, or Discover card with paypal.com!

We all have The Baseball Bond
Tell your Dad you love him...every time you talk to him. Dads, do the same to your sons. Son's do the same thing for your Mom's...everyday. As one that was raised by a single mom for most of my childhood, I can say that the mother son/daughter bonding experience is just as crucial as the father bonding experience. You know who caught my pitches when I didn’t have a Dad around...my mom!
I've tried to cover as much of the story here with out getting to salesmen like and without giving away the ending... But I wouldn’t be doing my job if I didn't ask you to share this story with everyone you know via Social Media and good ole' fashion word of mouth. And if you have a rich Uncle, please tell them about the Executive Producer perks! Or anyone that loves a good story. Send them all the video or tell them to go to www.thebaseballbond.com (opens new window) Also, we are starting our Press tour so please look for us on TV. Here was our last writeup The Baseball Bond news story on FOX (opens new window).
Finally, I just wanted to thank all of the people that helped me get here. My friends and family and mentors are my world and I try to make you proud in everything I strive to accomplish. We have about a total of 7000 combined hours put into this project and strongly feel that its going to be an award winning Documentary that was all of OURS.

Frequently Asked Questions (F.A.Q.)
How do I add this to Facebook or Twitter? (copy and paste this text below!)
My friend is making this movie and it looks really cool. Fathers and Sons get to play Baseball together on MLB fields! www.indiegogo.com/thebaseballbond
I'm a MSBL/MABL Member. Do I get a discount?
Yes! Although we have ZERO affiliation with Mr. Sigler and the MSBL (besides being a member since 1994), we are offering discounts for both former and current MSBL members. Former members can get a free DVD of the film when they order the T-shirt for $25.
When you are checking out, just scroll down to Step 4 and put in the comment Box the league name that you play in, the current league president, and the years that you played in the league (an estimation works) for verification reasons and just type MSBL Member DVD. *ALL references will be checked*
Current MSBL members can get the same deal as former members ($25 Shirt and DVD) or get either a Free Blu-ray with special Features or The Digital Download with any contribution over $25 (once again, you can contribute just $25 when you checkout or just get the $25 Shirt and specify in the that you!). *Please specify if you want the DVD, Bluray, or Digital download in the public comment section #4 after you hit contribute.
Please email me at firstname.lastname@example.org with the league name that you play in, the current league president, and the years that you played in the league (an estimation works). Also, tell me which perk you claimed and what the contribution dollar amount was.
Both current and former MSBL members can get the exclusive Newsletter by emailing the following as well - email@example.com
Have you found an Editor yet?
Sort of. But if you know a really good creative Story Editor WITH Documentary experience that wants to be apart of a film that could jumpstart a career, have them message me on facebook. Same goes for anyone that works in post-production.
Did you find George Summers?
I cant give that away just yet! I will say that I wouldnt have put this time in if the ending was dull. Its not! I promise you that you'll walk out of the theater with closure and wanna pick up the phone and call your Dad!
Where do you get the Certificate of Authenticities?
We are still working on that, but worst case scenario is that I make my own and give them to you. These are all one-of-a-kind custom Bats, Balls, and Jerseys with upwards of 20 sigantures on them. If someone is going to copy these, theyre going to have to spend a ton of money and then prove over 20 signatures are real based on the video that I have of the team signing them all.
Your credits say you were on The Bad Girls Club reality TV Show. True?
Did I Appear on it... NO!!! But I did shoot for one night during the first season in 2006. At the time, I didnt know what the show really was about and I literally turned down a producer after she suggested I "pursue" one of the girls on the cast. An old agent added that to IMDB.com without my approval and I am in the process of getting that credit deleted.
What's your production timeline?
If we can hit the campagin Goal, then we hope to be finished with the edit in December and then start applying to Film Festivals. Our target World Premiere is the Dallas Film Festival in early April 2013. If we dont hit the Goal, this movie will not come out until 2014 or 2015!
How do the Downloads work
You will be able to download the songs and movie as a Gift through a subscription based service such as Amazon or Itunes. We are still working on the exact process, but feel that is the most convienent way to proceed at this time due to the nature of Piracy.
When will you send the Perks out?
Items marked with an asterisk will be sent out starting in mid-November. The DVD, Bluray, and Digital Downloads will NOT be sent out until the film is released and that could be late Summer 2013. Not to worry though, that's why we are including other perks with your contributions. We'll take care of you!
Here is the exact list of what will be sent and when:
- T-shirts - start sending out in early November after the Shop gets done with the first bulk order.
- First Newsletter will run in late November
- Buddy Grave's songs will be ready in early December
