Thanks so much to everyone who donated! If you haven't caught our numerous updates, please check out our sites, which are linked at the bottom of the page, to catch all the new characters, the new information, and where you can download the first draft GDD this weekend to get specifics on gameplay without spoilers!
We're currently taking the time to work on a narrative prototype, and will update on those sites regularly!
Do you find yourself wondering if this game is for you? Read this beautiful, succinctly written essay on why one "mainstream" gamer is still extremely interested!
Edit on 1/25/2012: Thanks so much for every donation, it's you guys who will make Arkh possible. That said, we did not expect to reach our initial goal within only 10 days of starting the campaign. We're therefore setting an unofficial new goal for this particular campaign of 10,000! Don't let the momentum die! Keep donating, keep spreading the word, and keep supporting us until we hit the jackpot!
If you are unable to donate, but can spread the word to your town and neighborhood, we've drafted a flyer that you can print and hand out at your leisure! Join the #Arkh street team!
Edit on 1/19/2012: A special perk, a sketch of choice of any Arkh character, will be given to the person who puts us over the top of our goal! Thanks to everyone who donated so far!
Tired of your 50 millionth zombie survival horror? Tired of Final Fantasy doing another steampunk-y high fantasy game with the same character and story model? Want something so completely off the beaten track that we are appealing directly to its fanbase to help it live?
You're in the right place.
Follow the story of a deity bored with life amongst the gods, who leaves to find a purpose in life. Reincarnate your deity onto numerous worlds, live through the lives of others and gain life experience...but watch your God Energy, you need a lot of it to continue your astral journey. Fight monsters only you can see, sometimes around very particular civilians who refuse to get the heck out of your way. And most of all, see a game and a story that the big wigs refuse to give!
To break up our massive and ultimate goal of $100,000, we're going to fundraise for specific parts at a time. Right now we are fundraising for CHARACTER CONCEPTS.
The biggest impact we want to make with this game is on major million-dollar game companies. Most often people say that games focused on these groups won't sell. The point of Arkh is to prove them wrong.
Well, the buying power of Black, Latin, and Asian Americans (not even including those outside of those three groups!) is over 1 trillion dollars. The queer community (not even including all of the modern inclusions of queer!) is worth 485 billion dollars.
There is money there, and it can be had, but we need to focus on making games for those groups. We need to stop excluding and start building up lifelong fans in these groups who receive nothing at all. How can we know what will sell until we try it?
What We Need
Arkh needs a lot of money to succeed. The goal is a shippable quality 3D RPG, and that is fairly costly. However, it is NECESSARY for us to get up to the quality of mainstream gaming. That is what will draw the eyes of these companies. That is what will get them to realize that there is money in our markets and they should give us what we've been demanding for years.
How much money do we need?
A good game has numerous concepts completed to give the 3-D character artists the exact idea of what they need to model, and what that character should look like.
Each character concept of high quality, which includes a full body design and 3 headshot designs, costs $300. There are 8 characters and a small animal.
Ain needs 3 concepts.
Haruka, Romero and Neelu need 2 each.
The remaining 4 characters need 1 concept.
That's 13 character concepts in all. That will cost $3900.
Environmental concepts help the 3D environment artists design the space the characters will roam around in. They create the entire ambience of the game!
There are 13 levels in the game. Each one will need 3 drawings; a closeup of the general look, and an inside and outside model.
11 of them will cost $700. The last two will run cheaper at about $400-500 for both. That is about $8200 in all.
There will be approximately 25 unique monsters in the game, so that is 25 concepts. Each concept will run approximately $150-200. That is a total of approximately $5000.
In all, concepts will run $17,100 for top quality work.
Programming costs $4000 a month, with an estimated 8-10 months of programming. That is with a small studio, so there will be more than one programmer working on the project. That's a total of $32,000 to $40,000 in all.
3D Character work
Each main character will run $700-900 for the most expensive game-ready models, and this is a discounted price given to us by an amazing, top-level modeler who sides with our work. Minor characters will run closer to $300 a model. In all, we plan for there to be about 15 different models done, some of which will be generic models for NPCs.
That will run us approximately $6900.
In addition to that, the 25 monster concepts will run about the same price, and that will cost $10,000.
As far as animation, we are currently receiving volunteer animation work, so we will not include that until the time comes that we need to gain more animators.
In all, that will cost $12,000.
UIs make games simple to navigate and play.
A simple 2-D UI design will run approximately $1000-2000 in all.
Environmental design is one of those really costly areas of any game.
We have right now, plans for 50 different building designs, 27 different wall and floor sets, and 250 items. That will run us approximately $16,000 in all.
We have gotten a great price at $40 per simple item model for the game. Assuming approximately 150-200 weapon items, armor items, and healing items, this will run us approximately $8000 in all.
That would run this game approximately $100,000, accounting for the wonderful volunteers who are helping us create this. Depending on volunteer work, we may need as much as $250,000 to provide quality work.
As you can see, the game needs a lot of money and a lot of support to get off the ground. But it will be worth it to show these companies that people are willing to put this out there. The coordinators of this project make no money. ALL money goes to support professional artists and programmers who are queer and/or of color.
Don't worry if we don't reach our goal. We will continue fundraising until we make it.

Other Ways You Can Help
If you cannot afford to donate, that's okay! Check our tumblr! We hold raffles to win a lot of these items by just reblogging and spreading the word on twitter and facebook! A free way to ensure we get money is to click on ads right here on the Arkh tumblr, just a couple of clicks a day really helps us out a lot, but please don't rabid click all the time!
In addition, you can help us by doing your own fundraiser and spreading flyers in your towns, asking your local queer or PoC oriented papers to feature an article about us, your local university and human rights groups, and lastly, if you are a popular youtuber, or have a popular blog, post about us every once in a while just to keep the press up! And of course, it always helps if you know Oprah or Beyonce or Ellen or Rosie to come help us out!
