When I saw my grandma Nana Austin die from the indignity of Alzheimer's disease over the years, I thought why not build a computer cluster in her memory to fight Alzheimer's day and night - to go on the Alzheimer's attack and kick ass!
A computer cluster consists of a set of loosely connected computers that work together so that in many respects they can be viewed as a single system. For a definition see:
I believe that computer cluster techology combined with scientific research and large-scale volunteers can significantly help impact the understanding of Alzheimer's disease and its treatment. My success depends on like-minded individuals like you.
Nana Austin's Story
Nana Austin died just short of her 90th birthday after suffering from Alzheimer's Disease for over 10 years. She worked in a British ammunitions factory during World War 2 and brought up one son (my father) with her husband Harry Austin (my grandpa).
Nana also loved selling Avon door-to-door and made the best jam in the whole wide world! Nana never ever travelled far – she never left the UK - but she was the kindest soul I ever met - hence the idea for this campaign.
The Alzheimer's Blitzkrieg (as the computer cluster will be named!) will aid frontline Alzheimer's research by working on the Rosetta@home project which provides the Alzheimer's research workload packages for the computer cluster. What I Need & What You Get
The money is going towards building the computer cluster ($8500). I'm currently looking at 2 x 4.7Ghz Skt 2011 Intel Core i7 3930K - 24 cores of behemoth power! (for all those who know what that means!)
Luckily there are no software costs, as I'm using Open Source Linux which is free (Lubuntu).
Also, the set-up fees ($1500) are paying the first years electricity bill for the computer cluster (computer clusters suck electricity like vampires suck blood!) as well as paying for donor perks and marketing etc.
Other Ways You Can Help
*PLEASE spread the word with your friends and family via Facebook etc.
*Tomorrow's Alzheimer's research need never be the same as yesterdays, so lets cross the $10,000 threshold together!
