Last year the IndieGoGo community supported Palenque Norte by donating almost $1700 of our $5000 goal. With that money as a foundation we revived Palenque Norte and successfully produced a 25 hour lecture series in the harshest desert enviornment on earth, from which audio and video recordings have now reached over 1 million people in over 100 countries in just the last 9 months alone.
This year our goal is to raise $10,000 so that we may build the infrastructure (Circus Tent, Sound System Upgrade) needed to bring visionary lectures to more events and audiences throughout the world. Your donations mean the world to us and bring us to the world. Visit www.palenquenorte.com for more info.
What is Palenque Norte?
In 1999 Jonathon Ott, Terence Mckenna, Ken Symington and Rob Montgomery collaborated to create a legendary entheobotany conference near the Palenque ruins in Mexico. The conference inspired and enchanted its participants, and it was in the spirit of that gathering that Lorenzo and Marycie Hagerty created Palenque Norte in 2003. The name “Palenque Norte” means to bring the energy of Palenque north.
From 2003 to 2007 Lorenzo and Marycie organized Palenque Norte at the Burning Man festival, which hosted lectures and discussion from visionaries such as Sasha Shulgin, Nick Sands, Alex and Allyson Grey, Earth and Fire Erowid, Amanda Fielding, Erik Davis, Daniel Pinchbeck and over 50 others. With the recordings of these lectures Lorenzo began the Psychedelic Salon podcast in 2003, which has grown now to have a massive worldwide audience.
Over the next five years, the content that was captured in the dust and mayhem of Burning Man creeped out into the world to inspire generations of psychonauts.
So how did Palenque Norte return?
In 2012, an effort led by Dr. Bruce Damer began with the intent of bringing Palenque Norte back to Burning Man, and after some ticketing and theme camp chaos the lecture series was looking for a new home. After a series of synchronistic events it found that home in Camp Above the Limit, from which a group of us have now evolved into Camp Soft Landing. With support from Lorenzo Hagerty and Dr. Bruce Damer, a team led by Chris Pezza orchestrated the return of Palenque Norte. In the last 9 months we've released over 15 hours of visionary lectures which have been downloaded over a million times and viewed in over 100 countries around the globe.
So what is the goal of Palenque Norte?
There are two great purposes of Palenque Norte events, on the one hand to preserve the voices of elders and capture narratives that would be otherwise lost, and on the other to create spaces for new voices to be heard, to provide young innovative visionaries with airtime.
We’ve assembled a team of organizers with extensive experience in building organizations and throwing large scale visionary events.
We want to bridge the gap between the informative and the entertaining, bringing lectures and performance under one roof.
With community support we’ve built a modest infrastructure, and now we’re looking to expand.
Why we're raising Funds
We have a $10,000 funding goal.
If we meet our funding goal of $10,000 we’re planning to buy a 2300 sq ft circus tent that could support events upwards of 400 people. In addition we’re working to upgrade our sound system to support this larger capacity. Anything beyond our goal we’ll use to build lighting and staging infrastructure.
Please check out our perk levels to get a sense of what we're offering. We're very excited to release our new collectible Timothy Leary and Terence Mckenna flash drives, which will feature content curated by Dr. Bruce Damer including never before released material. Donors at the $250 level and higher will have first access to these special collector's items. Here's a pic:
