Every year, thousands of ideas go to waste.
It’s a modern tragedy and it’s only getting worse. The streets of the world are becoming littered with discarded ideas, rivers clogged with half finished projects and the sky has turned black with still-born dreams of that “next big thing”. Too many of us take on things alone. We’re starved of the resources, the money or the networks to help us do awesome in a way that’s . . . well, awesome. Enter Tech Hatchery.
Tech Hatchery is the first line of defence against ideas drifting off into the void. It’s a framework, a system, a physical and online space with the infrastructure to support, grow and help fund your ideas, dreams and projects and get them out into the world. Tech Hatchery is where you go to stop great ideas going down the gurgler before they even get off the drawing board. It’s less network . . . more playground.
Tech Hatchery is our big idea for rescuing the next big thing from obscurity. But without you and your big ideas . . . it’s as good as a good idea gone bad. Change begins at home and a world of change needs people like you to get behind it and make it happen. With just a little help from you and your friends we can save the world by creating, improving, saving, incubating and launching ideas into reality. Great ideas that do good things.
BUT WHAT IS IT?
Tech Hatchery is a physical place and an online organisation. It has its feet on the ground and its head in the clouds. With space for group work, solo work and more computers than your average Russian space station, Tech Hatchery will become a hub for any idea, big or small, to be kept safe and warm until it’s ready to hatch. No matter where your collaborators are in the world, you’ll never be more than a mouse click away. Just like an egg. Fancy that.
When you come to Tech Hatchery, you’re not going to be shuffled into a cubicle and told what to do. We want to provide the spaces, the systems, the relationships, the infrastructures to help you do what YOU want to do. More than just an incubator for warming a new-born idea, We’ll supply you with the networks to find the people you need (even if you don’t know you need them). Tech Hatchery is designed to help you get your project off the ground and out into the world.
What does a Tech Hatchery actually do? Glad you asked. Tech Hatchery is more than just a space for working: it’s a community. Whether you’re an expert in your field with a burning desire to help others, or a brand new graduate with a shiny new degree looking for a head start as a real-life grown-up, Tech Hatchery is your next stop.
Tech Hatchery provides a physical working / socialising / learning / creating space, along with all the fancy things the future has given us - like computers, the internet and coffee machines and a juice bar. It throws together a carefully thought-out random bunch of atoms into creative reactor and lets nature take its course. By extending the reach of each physical hub through the cloud Tech Hatcheries can inspire and connect people and teams of creative wizards anywhere in the planet. And that’s a pretty big place!
Folks who get involved with Tech Hatchery, sharing experience and skills, networking face to face and globally, will benefit from decades of accumulated experience in everything from web design to writing press releases to planning a world changing project. You might not meet rock-stars, but you could very well become one.
Tech Hatchery is a different concept and it takes a little bit to get your head around, please take some time to explore www.techhatchery.org to get a grip on things or watch the video update below.

You’ll get your first and last name listed on the founders wall at the Tech Hatchery, at every physical location in future. You’ll also be named, admired and adored for posterity on the Tech Hatchery website founders page and in the founding members document (PDF) pre-loaded on all USB #KEYTOCHANGE’s. AND you can get your name linked to anything you want on the internet. Wow.
Founding Member First Floor
You want more but not a ridiculous amount more. You get Founding Member Ground Floor plus early access to the online system with a permanent ‘Founders Badge’ on your profile. As well as access to the Git repository as we build the system, if you’re into that. And you probably will be.
Founding Member Second Floor
Okay so now we’re getting’ crazy. You’ll get Founding Member First Floor + your words of wisdom or message of support or your thoughts on what the key to change is in less than 140 characters. That will be displayed next to your name on the website, in the founding PDF document and the founders wall. Think if it as your words of wisdom to others, your legacy of inspiration to the world. Oooo that’s deep!
Founding Member Next Level Ridiculous
Just when you thought our perks couldn’t get ridiculous . . . we got ridiculous. You’ll get Founding Member Second Floor + featured at the top of the founders page/document/wall with your logo. You’ll also get a page of your own on the Tech Hatchery website – a whole page! We’ll pre-load all the flashdrives with a PDF from you with whatever you want to say. Now that’s ridiculous. That is just . . . ridiculous.
Every November Scott (the guy driving this campaign) grows one of the ugliest moustaches ever to grace the face of facial hair history for Movember. So he’s no stranger to putting his looks on the line for a cause that really matters. Now he’s going one further. He wants to get Tech Hatchery off the ground so bad he’s willing to get inked for it. That’s English for “tattooed”.
Yup, he’s putting the real estate of his own left leg up for sale to the highest bidders, to feature for every and for always, 140 character messages of support/words of wisdom (no names please!). And just so everybody knows about it, he’ll be posting a video of the tattoo being done once it’s all over. We hear he’s hitting the gym to build those legs up a bit to make sure you get the best bang for your buck.
Ever feel like you live in the town that time forgot? We know the feeling. If your city isn’t in the voting polls submit it. Then get behind it and get your friends to vote. The plan is that if we can stir up enough interest in your area and find the right sponsors we’ll strive to make some magic happen and bring a Tech Hatchery to a corner near you. An actual physical corner. But it doesn’t have to be a corner it could just be on a normal street. Somewhere, away from the corner. You get the idea.
After you've purchased a perk please fill out this form so we can you what you want and how you like it.

Let's talk business
We know one thing about industries and initiatives like ours – people don’t get involved for money, they get involved for the passion and for the thrill of the new. It’s all the adrenalin of skydiving without a parachute. And that’s why you’re reading. You’re sick of packing the parachute after every jump.
There’s a very good chance you’ll want to get involved with us on a big level in a big way. Well the feeling’s mutual. We’re looking to work with like-minded people from all around the world, to change the way people create together, to do things differently, more easily, more fun. Get in touch, let’s talk and see how we can help each other out.
Q: Why is the campaign funding goal $999,999?
A: Because asking for $1,000,000 would be vulgar. The number is arbitrary, we're trying to raise as much as we can, to make the biggest impact that we can, in as many places as we can. We'll be able to get off the ground in Hamilton with a $120k.
Q: How will the funds be used?
A: Frugally. Costs will include the building lease and fit-out, equipment, furniture, foundation/trust set up and running costs. We'll be cutting costs wherever we can, such as using wooden pallets and other recyclable materials to make desks and other furniture. We're all about functionality over fanciness. Annual financial reports will be published for all those interested.
Q: What industries will the Tech Hatchery be most suited to?
A: Mainly to the 'creative' type industry, such as (but not limited to): design, software, writing, advertising, marketing/PR, management, animation, digital media, photography, artists, engineering, architecture, accounting, legal.
Q: What does it cost for people to use Tech Hatchery?
A: There is no set pricing, packages or equity stakes. Everything works on a koha/gratitude system where people pay what they think the service is worth to them and they can use it as little or as much as they'd like.
Q: How is Tech Hatchery different to other incubators and coworking spaces?
A: It’s a network of incubators and coworking spaces, glued together by an online system that’s a mashup of a social network and a project management tool. It’s also open to people who can’t get to a physical space. It’s less network, more playground.
Q: Where will it be?
A: The first Hatchery will be in the heart of Hamilton City, New Zealand. The next Hatchery will be wherever you want to to be, vote and let us know where that is.
Q: Why should I contribute?
A: Because change starts from the ground up and we need your help. AND there are some cool perks for doing so, such as an 8GB USB key, your name name and words of wisdom plastered on walls to inspire others, some bumper stickers and heaps of other stuff! You’ll also get access to the Tech Hatchery as a founding member once it’s live, and fulfilment in knowing that you might help save that next big thing from obscurity.
Q: How long will the campaign run for?
A: The campaign will run for one month, from 21 November - 21 December. It is widely believed that on the 21 December the world is going to either cataclysmically end or enter into a new stage of consciousness. So if you're the doomsayer type and you think we're all going to be toast, please give us all your money - you won't be needing it right? But if you think it's the end of the world as we know it and the beginning of some positive change, great, the Tech Hatchery is all about changing the way we do things - please show some financial support to the campaign.
