My name is Jubilee Gamaniel, and I am the Writer, Director and Producer of the film Tarmun. There is one piercing fact that pushes me to make this movie: I am a survivor of abuse.
I come from a community where women are seen as “second class citizens,” having no opinion in the things that affect them directly. Growing up in a village of Northern Nigeria I have experienced the fear of facing problems that seem hopeless and I have seen other women struggle to overcome abuse. It is sad and frustrating to see. After completing 11 short films, I decided to dedicate my first feature to a cause close to my heart – violence against women.
I am obligated to turn my negative experience into a global movement to change the way women are treated and how we (as women) allow others to treat us. That is partly why film will be shot on 2 Continents: North America and Africa. It is a universal experience.
This film will be equally entertaining and inspiring – subtly influencing the viewers and our society to have more respect and compassion for women. That’s why this is a movement and not just a movie!
I was inspired to write a story that would make a difference and now I call on my community to join me in changing the world.
Tarmun translates to “our pain” in my language and the film tells the story of three women, trying to find love, trying to escape from love and trying to make love work but are faced with domestic violence and forced child marriage. Its three women interconnected by the dark social issues they are forced to face in their societies.
Kimora, a young girl with dreams to become educated is forced to choose between her family's honor and her education. Barbra an American woman newly transplanted to Nigeria is forced to obey African traditions, or lose her daughter in an attempt to fight back. Sara is forced to choose between her husband’s love and her life.
All attempts by these three women to escape are futile. Things spin out of control when all three women lives are interwoven by a crisis that breaks out. They must do everything they can to help each other.
I am very pleased to have the following dynamic actors attached to bring this story to life: SAHARA GAREY (Akeela & the Bee), SAHNDRA FON DUFE (Last night in Vegas), HABIBA TANKO(Finding Diamond Jo), JENNIFER OGUZIE(Last Flight to Abuja, Best Actress at the GPACT Golden Crown Awards), JON GOTTEM (After Dark), and KENNETH DAMA ORTEGA (Debut film).
THE IMPACTViolence Against Women fact:Around the world, at least 1 in every 3 women has been beaten, coerced into sex or otherwise abused during her lifetime. It’s time to change this statistic!
This movie is very personal and close to my heart because I have lived this life and mourned it. I want to show the world my story and the stories of so many young girls, as well as the men and women who are still struggling with abuse. When we can see it…we can change it!
Plus 20% of the proceeds made from the movie will be donated to support women overcoming abuse. Your contribution to this movement will make a HUGE difference to the girls, mothers, daughters, sisters and possibly even your neighbors who are overcoming abuse. Imagine how good it will feel to know in your heart that YOU made a difference.
Everyone deserves a good life, with your support we won’t just be making a movie, we will be changing lives.
WHAT WE NEED AND WHAT YOU GET
I have meticulously reviewed our filmmaking needs and set a budget of $200,000 so we can make the best film possible. The initial $50,000 Indigogo goal will start to cover our basic production needs in Nigeria and Los Angeles.
We plan to use this initial $50,000 to show potential investors there is excitement and support of the film so they can fund the remaining $150,000. Your donation will directly go to these production needs:
- Equipment rentals: camera, lighting, electrical generators (for shooting in a rural setting), boats for filming on water, and other equipment.
- A first class Director of Photography. Nana Asante, owner of Resolve studio's.
- An all star cast of actors (Sahara Garey and Anthony Monjaro to name a few) who will be paid a fair wage to honor their artistic contribution.
- International transportation for key crew and cast members, and ground transportation for crew and equipment.
- On set expenses: production design, costume creation, and craft services (well fed cast and crew are proven to make better movies!)
- Experienced crew members: a steadicam operator, location scouts, grips, gaffers, electricians, production assistants, videographers, cooks, a script supervisor, a set photographer, background actors, set dressers etc
We plan on making every cent of your contributions count.
YOU ARE VERY IMPORTANT
The unique thing about this project is that all the proceeds of the movie will be donated to charity, plus at certain donation levels you get to pick the charity to be donated in your name.
The money you donate will not only be making a movie, we will be changing lives around the world.
IF WE RAISE OVER $50,000
We take this film to the next level. Those onboard already strongly believe in this story and know the film will be great, but we’d love to really let it shine by upping the production value and getting the word out once the film is done.
During editing, this will mean hiring post-production specialists like visual effects, music composers, sound designers, and color graders. After the film is complete, we’d love to use extra cash to kick off a distribution campaign that includes submissions to top-tier film festivals, publicity of all kinds.
Why Jubilee is right for this film:
Film production is not without risk. Paradigm Pictures International, Inc. (S corporation) will obtain production insurance to cover loss and damage of property. However, all productions are subject to potential acts of God and nature that cannot always be anticipated. In the event that production cannot be completed, remaining funds will be prorated and refunded to donors based on their contributions.
