Hello, I am Ted Michaels, the writer and director of Tangoborn Menclenty. I've been in Los Angeles for over twenty years doing comedy. I'm an alum of the Groundlings Theater, where I am a founding member of The Crazy Uncle Joe Show, and have directed several shows. I've performed with Eddie Izzard in his One Word Improv show in Los Angeles. I've written for television (Bucket and Skinner's Epic Adventures) and web content (DumbDumb, The Nerdist Channel). Tangoborn Menclenty is my fourth screenplay.
I wrote Tangoborn with the idea of making it myself for little or no money. There are only nine speaking parts, and only five major locations. Of course, once I actually started to put a shooting plan in motion, several unavoidable costs made themselves known. Some were obvious (apparantly film crews need to eat) and some were not so obvious (color correction? Why wouldn't the color be correct? Just film it correctly!) So, even though I had $15,000 available to invest, a realistic budget that would make Tangoborn the festival darling it is destined to be, looked to be more like $32,000. That's where you come in. I guess I am asking you all to invest in weirdness.
Tangoborn Menclenty is inspired by some of the crazy indy films of the seventies and eighties (Repo Man, Where's Papa, Monty Python and the Holy Grail to name a few). I have to go back that far, because there just aren't that many completely out there, thinking person's comedies made these days. The film is about an artificially manufactured moron (Tangoborn) who is tasked with saving the Earth from itself. There are aliens, aggresive urologists, ninjas and a refraction biopter named Marigold. A pimp named Parquet keeps things grounded, as Tangoborn learns the importance of loyalty, true love, and putting on a good live sex show.
No studio would ever in a million years help fund this thing. It's just too weird. Here's a novel of mine if you want to get a feeling for my writing style:http://www.amazon.com/The-Beach-Beneath-Fantastic-ebook/dp/B00D6N11RY/ref=sr_1_1?s=digital-text&ie=UTF8&qid=1370903525&sr=1-1&keywords=the+beach+beneath+the+beach
Tangoborn is first and foremost a comedy, but it does have a heart too. There is a love story and quite a bit of social commentary.
The amazing cast is: Andrew Friedman, Jordan Black, Heather Morgan, Gary Anthony Williams, Stephanie Courtney, Harry Hannigan, Brian Palermo and me!!!
What We Need & What You Get
Your money will go directly towards things I can't get for free. It's a nine day shoot and I need a good sound crew for at least seven of those days. Sound is EVERYTHING in comedy. At $400 a day, that's $2,800 right there. I also need to spend money on filling out the camera crew for my Director of Photography Hopper Stone, and I need at least one makeup person and a wardrobe person. It might not sound sexy, but paying a living wage to an experienced gaffer (lighting) will have a huge impact on how the movie will look. No gaffer with experience in his or her right mind would do a project like this for free. But most of us, including myself, will be working for nothing or the very minimum of what SAG-AFTRA (the actor's union) will allow me to pay them.
I've made my perks a little more experience oriented rather than stuff oriented. There will be digital downloads of the film and the usual DVD sent to those who give at a certain level, but a lot of the perks are things like set visits, personal interactions with cast members and crew, and also actual bit parts in the film itself. And there will be tee shirts because they're cool and I want one too.
Just so you know, if we don't reach our goal of 17,000, the movie will still get made. I've made it my personal mission to see this thing through. I will have to make some tough decisions that might effect the quality of the end product, though, and I don't want to have to do that. Also, if we make more than the goal, those funds will go directly toward post production costs.
