Hi I’m Mira, and I am embarking on a project, starting in Brazil, to create surf hip hop videos that will inspire and empower girls around the world to get outdoors, hit the waves, and boldly be themselves.
Growing up as a little brown girl who loved outrunning boys, playing the drums, writing rhymes, and climbing trees, when I encountered media targeted to girls my age, I felt deflated. There is plenty of media telling girls that they need to dress, act, and look a certain way in order to be accepted. There is not nearly enough media telling girls that it is awesome and fun and radical to be out there in the world, trying new things, making mistakes, charging waves, falling on your face, getting up, laughing about it, and trying again.
I propose to counter this trend, by creating fun, genre-crossing music and videos celebrating girls’ surfing. We will be putting girls at the forefront of surfing and hip hop media, where they are often relegated to the sidelines. I will be teaming up with my friend Miho Aida who has been working for the past 4 years as a documentary filmmaker and public speaker to tell the stories of female role models in the outdoors all around the world through her project, “If She can do it, You can too.”
What We Need & What You Get
I will be embarking on this journey in Brazil, a country with a rich culture of music, a long coastline, and home to some of the best surfers in the world. I received a generous grant from the Matt Baxter Memorial Fund to set me off on this journey. I am asking for your help to match this grant by raising $5000, to help cover the following:
- Production expenses, which include:
- Renting studio time
- Sound engineering
- Camera and sound recording assistance
- Equipment investments, which include:
- Editing equipment and software
- Surf-safe camera and mount
- Recording equipment
- Distribution costs
- Travel costs
Check out our cool perks, to thank you for supporting this project!
By supporting this project, you are helping to create new media that builds community, empowers young women, and connects people across the world. Media creates culture, and we are aiming to create a culture that empowers and gives voice to girls. We are working at the grassroots level, so each dollar has an extra impact in terms of empowering people, and creating ownership for the artists and subjects involved. We’ll be utilizing social media in a big way, through regular updates on our website, facebook page, and other digital feeds. Miho and I are also planning to spread the word the old fashioned way, through speaking tours and film screenings.
