Werk it! a Trans & Queer Youth Network Gathering
FIERCE, Branching Seedz of Resistance (BSEEDZ) at the Colorado Anti-Violence Program, and Reteaching Gender and Sexuality are teaming up to bring "Werk it! a Trans & Queer Youth Network Gathering" to the 14th annual Allied Media Conference.
Werk It! will bring together lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer youth organizers from across the country for a day of fabulous, creative, and radical media-making and strategizing! Through interactive activities, skill-shares and strategy sessions, we will share knowledge, develop leadership and build a network for strengthening the power of our communities to fight back—locally, regionally and nationally!
Network Gatherers will work on implementing social media platforms to amplify youth voices, create mapping tools to share information, and explore ideas for broader collaborations. We will also discuss ways to build and maintain active, sustainable networks that support youth-organizing efforts across geographical borders and help us stay connected throughout the year.
About Werk It! Organizers
FIERCE is a membership-based organization building the leadership and power of LGBTQ youth of color in New York City. Since 2000, we’ve been developing politically conscious leaders who are invested in improving ourselves and our communities through youth-led campaigns, leadership development programs, and cultural expression through arts and media. Branching Seedz of Resistance (BSEEDZ) is a youth-led project working to build community power to break cycles of violence affecting LGBTQ young people in Colorado. Using strategies of community organizing, arts & media, action research and direct action BSEEDZ sparks dialogue, educates and empowers youth to take action. Led entirely By Youth, For Youth BSEEDZ continues to build a base of youth leaders locally and nationally who are committed to fighting for safety and justice in their lives, families and communities. http://www.coavp.org/
Reteaching Gender and Sexuality is about rethinking the popular narratives about gender and sexuality. We’re an intergenerational team of mediamakers and community educators based in Seattle. We center young people’s voices and move them to the forefront of conversations about young people’s lives. We work to support grassroots education and advocacy efforts by and for local communities. We focus on intersecting identities, queer youth action and resilience, creating more liberating spaces, and institutional accountability. http://www.reteachinggenderandsexuality.org/
How You Can Support Us!
Our organizers will be traveling to the conference in Detroit from across the country including New York, Colorado, and Seattle. Any contributions you make will go toward our conference registration fees, travel, housing, and food costs.
Your support will help our largely youth led team attend the conference, facilitate the Werk It! gathering, and network with other organizers. Through Werk It! we also hope to generate collarboration ideas and organizing tools that can be shared with queer youth organizers across the country, including those who can't make it to the conference this year.
