Who are we?
Situated in Waterloo, Ontario, the Canadian Clay and Glass Gallery is a long-standing site of excellence and a destination for contemporary art for international tourists and regional citizens. A relevant and dynamic cultural organization, the Gallery provides supportive education programs to people from across the Region.
What is the project?
Initiated by The Clay & Glass, this year’s Glass Fourteen is our third biennial public art project. With artist mentor Laurie Spieker (Grand River Glassworks) and the Director of Education Sheila McMath (Canadian Clay and Glass Gallery), high school students from Kitchener and Waterloo are in the process of creating a glass public art project to be installed in the winter of 2013. The design will be a tree image that chronicles the four seasons through natural phenomena and will be 15 ft high by 13 ft wide.
Participating students are required to make practical, technical and logistical decisions in the realm of public art making. The students are ‘the drivers’ of the project—from initial decisions about the overall design, to the creation of scale drawings, through the realization of the finished artwork. This is also a unique portfolio opportunity for students who are planning to pursue arts-related careers. The finished artwork will have a permanent and visible presence in the community to be enjoyed by regional citizens and tourists.
While this project has been supported by the Region of Waterloo Arts Fund and the Ontario Arts Council’s Education Project Grant, the legitimate costs now associated with the larger scale project are not being met through the project resources. We would like to be able to complete this ambitiously complex project that these students have collaborated on and unveil it in its permanent location in Winter 2013.
